Discount Tires, Always wanting to replace not repair?

I am starting to get annoyed by them. So yesterday, I am driving home swerved and I can feel that my tire popped or lost air significantly. I knew that when I switch to my winter setup that they must have a rim leak, corrosion or what not. It had it last year and I took it to them and they sanded down the rim blah blah. So I thought man it was too low on tire pressure to sustain that turn. Tire must have move slightly and let the air out.So I literally pulled over when it was safe to do so. Maybe less than 2 -3 city blocks low speeds and pulled into the parking lot to change the tire. Once I finished I raced over to Discount Tires to make sure it was just that and not a nail or anything like that. The dude does not even take the tire out and looks at the outside walls and tells me I need to replace it. I was like what? He said that is has a heat ring from driving it flat and it is hazardous tire and they will not fix it. So he was like you have warranty blah blah and we can order you one, prorated. I was like I will call you tomorrow. Drove home and fired up the compressor and the tire inflated. Looked it over and it is marked but so slightly. You can still notice the letter markings. I mounted it last night and drove it today and still holding pressure. Drove just fine but with the thought in the back of my mind. I tired to look it up on the net and the only other reference is Tirerack, but they go further and say to inspect the tire from the inside which makes sense. Something that Discount Tire did not even bother to do. I was like ain't this something. They are so replacement happy all the time! They were like that with my Porsche too! I had another tire shop patch it and drove that tire for over 4K to FL and back!

So what do you think? Is it hazardous or are they being extra cautious now a days?

Simple solution, next time you have a tire issue find another tire store in your neighborhood. I have 1/2 dozen within a 7 mile radius of my front door but only one that I trust. Find another besides Discount tire, imagine how many people they screw with that "It needs to be replaced" line....Gary

I hear you! It irks me when I am in their store. I hear the sales guys talking non sense. I do need to find one. That was just the convenient one at the time and I bought the warranty figuring winter tires see a lot of curbs in the winter.

Thanks

After hearing your story the rep there probably thought it would be safer to just swap the tire out than take a look at the tire, not find anything, and have it potentially blow out causing you to have an accident later on due to him missing something. Discount Tire is really finicky about that kind of stuff. I know they won't touch a car with wheel spacers installed.

If there isn't any external damage that you can see, definitely take it to a shop that is willing to inspect the tire for any internal issues.

Yeah, I am definitely going to do that. They are getting worse with every visit. I would have settled for the internal inspection look and see if it needs to be replace but flat out say the tire is no good while looking at in the trunk of the car to me is pure laziness.

im pretty sure its more safer to just replace a tire thats been compromised. and less liability on their part. sure u can continue using the tire but its purely at ur own risk. no one can predict how a compromised tire will respond with continued use.

on the flip side i had a nail that was too far on the outside of the tire and sears said they wont/cant replace it..i understand the reasoning. so i jus plugged it myself and just kept an eye on it and the tire lived a happy and full filling life with the rest of the tires

I am sure it is the less liability on their part. I definitely would not drive on it if was compromised, saving a few hundred bucks is not worth an accident.

That is exactly what happened to me with my Porsche! Drove it to Fl and back with no problems.
