Buying new tires - opinions?

Hi everyone,

Thinking of General Gmax AS-03 for my 2004 G35 Coupe.

OEM tire sizes on the 6-spoke 17" rims (width - 7.5" front and 8" back) are 225/50-17, 235/50-17.

I want the widest possible tires for the rear, but I'm not too comfortable with making this decision without first consulting with others.

Concerns from searching involve VDC issues and side-wall ballooning. At minimum I want 245/50-17 (+1.50%), but if there's no benefit I'll reluctantly stick with the 235/50-17s.

My goal is to have sufficient traction to minimize wheelspin, without significant tread wear compromise. The OEM Potenzas were garbage especially in the rain.

Thanks!

General is a good tire. I guess you want all season tires. Did you think about hankook? They have a good tire. Tire rack did a review on hankooks noble 1 s2. They out performed the as 03. I run hankook tires. they are quiet handle roads like its on rails and they wear well! I'm not familiar with what size tires you can run stagger. Because I have an X

If you live in a wet climate, I will suggest Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3.

Personally, I run Pilot Super Sports which are the best road tire I've ever owned.

Just go to tire rack and look at their test results. They have test results for summer only winter tires and all season tires.they categories such as ultimate high performance, high performance and make your decision from the test results.

Stating your climate and driving styles and tire characteristics that matter to you would help. Do you want a/s, summer, comfy, quiet, great wet/dry, tread life????

I had a look at the tires, the Hankook Ventus S1 noble2 come in my size and are cheaper, and have all around better characteristics. I think I'll opt for those then.
How do you find them in the rain Gman56?

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 are not available in my sizes unfortunately.

To clarify I do have a winter set of tires as well, however I prefer to have all season, as it can snow at odd and unpredictable times in my climate (i.e. occasionally in May, or October).

Still looking for an answer re: tire stagger sizes!

The Generals have been a decent tire for the money. They tested really well here. Strong in wet/dry but lack a bit on the winter side. I'd stick with oe sizes as that taller 245 could cause VDC issues.

Did you ever buy new tires?

For great price if they have your size is Hankook Ventus R-S3 on clearance. These are dedicated summer tires with top tier dry performance. But loud road noise, probably faster wear, and average wet performance.

Next is the Hankook Ventus V12, there is a 2nd gen out with a higher number like k120 or something. I think its the k110 is older. It is cheaper and is still great. Has longer life, little quieter, slightly less dry performance, and slightly better wet performance.(compared to R-S3)

For a more all around tire is the Continental DWS. Its got better than average dry, wet and snow performance. Has average wear rate I hear, and isn't too loud, but not quiet. If you have less snow, than the Continental DW is fine too. I just hear better reviews from DWS.

I have owned all 3. And the R-S3 and DWS are my current tires.
