Better to buy 17" rims for winter tires?

2004 g35 and I think it will be better to buy 17" rims AND winter tires because they are cheaper than buying 18" winter tires alone wtf?

Currently I have 225/45/18 and 245/45/18 tires.

17" winter tires are literally half the price of 18" and I could buy nice new rims if I wanted. 100$ per rim and 120$ per tire vs 200 for JUST the 18" tire.

Can I just swap to 17" rims and everything will still be okay? Or can I not switch without changing breaks or w/e.

Welcome.

First of all, what year? Sedan or coupe? Stock, brembo or performance calipers?

If you have stock calipers (non-brembo), then 17s will fit just fine. Dont buy 17s new. You can get a set of 4 for less than $200.

Majority of people, including myself when I had a 6MT, went down to 17's for winter. Most common setup is 225/50-17 front and 225/55-17 rear. The narrower rear tire will help greatly in snow/ice traction and the car will operate fine with those sizes.

Base model coupes came with 17" stock, so feel free to find a used set of those and slap them on. neal@tirerack provided you the stock tire sizes for the 17" wheel.

Since you don't have brembos, they will fit just fine. The "performance calipers" deafbringer was referring to would be an aftermarket big brake kit, if you have to ask, then you probably just have stock brakes.

/\----- This.

And I run 17's over my Brembos w/no issue. You just have to find the right wheel. I run the ASA JH3, which I bought from Tirerack many years ago. Keep an eye out for a set on here and on Craig's List, etc.
