05 Sport Package and lowering
05 Sport Package and lowering
Sorry if this topic has already been discussed, but I search the forums and couldn't find an answer...
I am considering installing lowering springs (eibach 1.1/1.2) and am concerned about the wearing of the shocks and struts. How good are the shocks and struts of the 05 sport suspension package? Will these wear out quickly too? Do you guys think they'll need to be replace after 2 years?
I know I *should* replace the shocks and struts now, but I don't see the point. If I have to buy new shocks and struts anyways, wouldn't it be better to just use stock until they wear out and then replace the shocks and struts later with brand new ones? The only difference is labor costs of installation, but the benefit is that you'll have brand new shocks and struts after 2 years or whenever your stock ones wear out.

I had the same decision on previous cars. However, to understand the *point* of replacing struts now, you have to ask yourself what you are doing when installing lowering springs. When going to a lowered spring, you are increasing the spring rate, [ie- they are stiffer springs to accomodate for the fact that you have less travel in the spring] and your stock shocks are designed to be used for/with your stock spring rates and stock ride height. If you do just do springs, you will be ok as far as driving, but your car will not handle better, it may even handle worse. as the shocks are conintuouly over worked, you will notice that they will be degrade to the point where your car bounces around like a beach ball when driving over a pebble.
what i did, was replaced shocks and struts at the same time, and kept the original suspension in a box. this is useful for when you hit a horrible pothole, and you need to replace a strut, or when some *** hits your car on the highway and you need to replace the struts and can't get your aftermarket replacements in time. also, when selling the car, you can rip them off, sell them here, and get rid of the car with stock suspension. just my $0.02, but if you want better handling, go with both, if you just want the look, i guess do the springs.

If it's a 2005 6mt coupe, I'd be interested in your old springs & struts!
