No, tires do not have any break in period and would not be the cause of burning rubber smell.
Is it possible something foreign got on your exhaust or your brakes during the tire install which might explain a burning smell immediately after the install? Were your fluids topped off and a little spilled on the engine or exhaust? It doesn't sound like anything to worry about unless it reoccurs some more.

actually tires do have a break in period for wearing out the release lube
from the mold and to wear the tires to the car's toe and camber angles.
but burning smell... NO. unless one was to do a quick burn-out.

shopping bags on the exhaust pipe maybe?

I stand corrected on the break in period.

Bags would explain the "plastic" smell for sure. Whatever it was must have happened a couple of times to explain his situation.

smokedhen- you laugh, but that's because you haven't been exposed to
the full real world experience.

I remember you talking about changing your own oil recently. Are you sure it wasn't oil on your exhaust pipes?
