I've never shipped rims but I have worked for UPS, when I was in college. Our rule of thumb was if you felt like it was packaged well enough to withstand a drop from chest height then it was packed sufficiently. Shipping companies are brutal. Oh and of course insurance is a must!!!!

Are you going to ship just wheels or wheels and tires?

You cant just put cardboard over the face and tape it. Here is what you need to do. Go to office depo and get some of their foam on a roll (NOT bubble wrap this can leave marks too) and cover the entire face of the wheel real good and tape that down to the tire, then cut the cardboard about 1 inch shorter than the tire and tape that down. Then wrap the whole thing with lots of that plastic wrap stuff and tape it all down real tight. This will prevent any "box burn" from the cardboard shifting over the face of the wheel. I've shiped over 200 sets of wheels like this and never had a problem.

SR71, how would you recommend shipping wheels alone (without tires mounted)? Thanks.

I would use a thick box with 1 inch room on all 4 sides. Then put a extra piece of cardboard on the bottom of the box then the wheel then some of the foam to protect the face ( tape the foam to the barrel of the wheel, not alot of tape is needed so dont go crazy with it). Next put another layer of cardboard on top. Now if your box is too tall cut it down so the wheel cant move when closed. Now before you close it up you still have to deal with the extra 1" on the sides. Cut some cardboard pieces and and fill in this gap and make sure the pieces are atleast 15" long and as tall at the wheel so they will protect the edge of the wheel if it gets banged around. Lastly stuff a bunch of news paper in the corners of the box so that the side protectors wont shift around it the box (if the cardboard does move when being shipped it will still protect the sides because it was cut big enough to go from corner to corner and still protect the wheel). Now tape up the box and give it a shake and nothing should move in the box. Some people will consider my style overkill but I can tell you that nothing feels worse that getting a new part or wheel and when they arrive they are bent or have boxburn because someone did not take the time to pack them right. I would rather spend the extra time to make sure they are happy and got what they wanted, how they wanted it.
