19" wheels and sport suspension worth it?
19" wheels and sport suspension worth it?
Hey Guys-
Current IS300 owner... looking to upgrade. Looked at the IS350 which is damn powerful, and test drove the G35 today. The G35 handles really nicely and sounds good too!
Anyways, I drove a black/stone G35 auto with the 19" wheels and the sport suspension. Is the sport suspension THAT much of a difference maker over its 18" non-sport companion? It's a $1,600 upgrade... I dont race or anything, but if the drive is going to suck without, I guess I'll get it. Anyone know if I'm going to notice the lack of sport suspension and 18" wheels instead of 19"
Thanks... I might buy a black/stone this weekend so help! =)

Are you eventually going to lower it or are you going to keep it stock? If you are keeping it stock I'd go with the sport suspension. If not when you add springs and sways later that will accomplish what you are looking for in terms of handling. My two cents is that you should get the sport package, the way the car handles is half the fun and you will not regret spending the extra $$$.

I drove G's with 18" and 19" and opted for the 18" wheel package also, I like the looks of the 18's better. When I was younger I autoX and did time trials but now my priorities have changed and I no longer am involved in those activities. IMHO, without the suspension package, it handles fine with the advantage of the better ride quality it was a no brainer and added OEM aluminum pedals for $75. I want to do a slight suspension drop so why pay for items that will be taking out.
If you get the G it's all good, hope this helps.
Good luck,
Mark

Test drive both and you decide. I think most here like the 19's for the bling bling thing, but you pay for it in tire longevity and replacement cost. Don't know if this matter to you or not, but with the sport suspension, you also get the VLSD. If you get the 18's, you can always upgrade the sways. Many here are replacing even the sport package sways with aftermarket ones like Stillen.
Wow thanks for the comments guys.
Honestly, I hope this isn't going to get me flamed, but I don't really know a whole lot about cars. Chances are very good I'm going to keep the car stock (although my car fanatic friend might want to help do some stuff to the car) but definitely maintenance is an issue. I don't want to be changing tires every year as that can get very costly ... but I also want to get the best value for my money.
If the dealer works with me on price, there's a great chance I'm taking delivery of a G35 tomorrow. I'll ask them to let me test drive the non-sport version and see what I think.
If I get the car, I'll post what I got and how much I got it for if anyone cares. I generally prefer a quieter, smoother ride over pure performance, but, if the driving is THAT much better with the sport, I'm getting it =)
Thanks for all your help ... you're making the decision to drop $40k a lil easier =)

BTW, wow, I didn't know there was such a huge difference between the 18" and 19" in terms of cost!

i didnt get the sport package i instead just installed some of the sport package options myself at a much cheaper price, i like the old style 18inch rims better then the new oem ones,, they are still offering the old style rims if you want them
I bought my 6MT coupe with the sports suspension. I must say it is the best suspension I have driven in any car. I had a 95 GSR with an aftermarket rear sway bar which was a very good handling car but this G35 is much better handling and doesn't roll as much as the GSR even with the added sway bar. It is stiffer over bumps though so you should keep this in mind if you drive mainly over roads that have potholes or are in poor shape.

I don't like the ride of my 05 MT. The 19's give a rough and noise ride. It does handle nicely, tho. I've actually been thinking about trading my G for either an Acura TL or TSX. Mark, why did you trade your TL for the G? I've driven the TSX and find it fun to drive, but is not as powerful as the G, since it's a 4cyclinder. The TL is very nice, but not as much fun to drive with the manual trans. I may switch to a AT, if the TL were my selection. I think the interiors of the Acuras are nicer than the Infiniti.
My advice is, if you're gonna spend all this cash, you have to test drive everything that interests you and go from there, your tastes are diffrent than everyone here....so you have to judge for yourself.
I have the sport tune suspension and 19" and I love it

I did it! I bought one today =)
I bought a 2006 G35 5AT, black obsidian with stone leather interior. It's really nice. I ended up going with the 19" sport suspension package even though it was more since I get the car for $500 over invoice...
I love it. The ride is sweet...
Just gotta figure out the nav and bluetooth now =)
Thanks again guys .. I could post pics but I'm sure you've all seen a black G35 before =) Haha. The rims on the car look pretty spiffy too!
