Wider tires on stock 18's. Profile question. EDITED

I thought I'd finally make me first post instead of just lurking.

Question for all who might know. I want to go with a lower and wider tire on my stock 03 18" rims. I was looking at going 245/40 up front and something like 275-285/40 rear...

I'm replacing the Pilot Sports with the BFG G-Force KDW2's.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Some people have done it.

I WOULDN'T. Recommend 245/40/18 front and 255/45/18 in rear. That's the widest size I would go with the stock rims. Anything bigger, IMO, is unsafe. The 245/255 combo will reduce the understeer. The 8" wheels are just to narrow handle anything larger.

Thanks for the input and link Lowrider. The fronts are 18x8 and the rears 18x9 (at least that's the numbers I've found searching the net), so I'm pretty sure I can go a bit wider then stock. Just have to figure out how wide and how tall.

I havent bought any higher performance tires, for a car that performs for some time now. I own an off road mag, so ive been busy buying big off road tires. The last set I bought, man I cant even remember the brand. Although I do have to say that the "trend" has changed A LOT!

Used to be that the tire stuck out a bit, or at least was even with the rim. I remember when it was hard to curb your wheels, cause you'd hit the tire first. Now I see these guys with thier wheels sticking out and the tires actaully angling inward

I would assume that it doesnt work to well cornering that way. You'd be using some of the sidewall in a hard cornering situation, whereas the "old" style of having the tire at least even with the wheel, you'd be staying on the tread...

Well, we'll see what I can come up with and be safe. I'm just not into the whole lip of my wheel sticking out an inch from my tire.

After further searching I found out that my rears are only 18x8 just like the front. Ooops. Better call the tire shop and change that order I just put in.

I found somewhere on a site that said 18x9 was the stock size for the rears...good thing I looked again!!

Looks like 245/40-18 and 265/40-18 then.

Thanks for the info.

OK so I looked at some tire size calcualtors after I found out my wheels are 18x8 all the way around.

Say I go 235/40-18 and 255/40-18. I like the look of the lower profile tire, and would assume it would handle just as well, it not better..a bit wider and a bit lower. I know the speedo will be off 1MPH or so, not worried about that.

I just cant find any tires that I want in the 245/265-40 combo. I would like to go a bit wider as a stated, but do not want the sidewall ANY taller. So as I asee it, the 40's would keep the sidewall nice and low and a small increase in width would help to.

Anyone, comments?

You wont like the gap left by the smaller tire on the front wheel. 245/40/18 is the better choice.

So 245/40 and 255/40.

I actually went out right after I made that post and looked at just that...the gap. What it is and would be.

I see what you're saying about the 245 vs 235 up front.

Not that it matters, but I just went with the stock sizes. I'll go bigger once I pick out my new wheels, in the 19" flavor

Thanks for input though!
