Brake dust and wheels

So does brake dust have any effect on wheels? Like does it hurt the finish at all? I have some gunmetalish colored wheels and the brembos are leaving their trail all over them.

I am not quite sure of what, if any, adverse effects brake dust may or may not have on wheels. However, I would not leave the said on for very long . . . It simply looks ugly.

You'll want to wash the wheels everytime that you wash the car. It would take sometime but the contaminants can bed themselves into the finish of the wheels and cause staining.

If they are kept clean they are easy to clean. All it should take is the use of some carwashing soap with a couple of tools such as brushes and rags (or mitts) to get them clean. A good coat of wax or sealant can be useful on wheels too after you get them all cleaned up.

What year is your G? if its 05 and on? the brake dust should be minium at best and from what I've experienced, the 05's dust are very very tiny/fine dusts not flaky kind that my 03's or M3 have, so there should not be much of the issues of it affecting the finishs of the wheels, the bigger flake might burn the finishs of the wheel and leaves permanent mark, just neede to be carful when you wash them, especially if you have aftermarket ones, use clean mitt and two buck system.

My previous whip was an 04 Titan. Man, do I know brake dust. I've never seen so much. Anyway, there was never any perm damage. Like the above poster mentioned, wash them w/ care...often.

It's also a good idea to go w/ Wheel Wax. Don't just use a standard wax. From what I've read, it will not hold up under the heat.

i don't wash my car often - maybe once every 3months or so, so I get A LOT of break dust on my rims that just sits.....other than rock chips I don't have any problems (e.g., discoleration, etc..) w/ them in the last 40odd months.

^ Every three months

My car hides the dust (Liq Plat) and if I go 3 weeks I get anxious.
But who cares. I bet my wife wishes I was less OCD about this car.

Some people like wheel wax while others think it's a marketing gimmick. Personally I’ve never used it and although I love to buy new car care products I don’t see buying this one anytime soon.

Any durable wax is fine to use. Klasse AIO/SG twins is said to be good at keeping the wheels slick enough to make cleaning a bit easier. There are many people who sware by 4 coats of SG on their wheels. You should layer any of the products to provide maximum protection.

As far as the heat goes the surface of your wheels do not get as hot as a black car sitting in the sun all day. The heat does not seem to transfer that much under normal driving conditions.

I have an 04 Coupe with Brembo's too and had to clean the wheels at least once every other day to keep them from being gunmetal looking in color. I've since changed my pads to the Hawk pads and brake dust has been cut by at least 75%.

Oh and Mr. Wonderful - Please let us know how the Wheel Wax works for you. I am sure many would be interested. Thanks!

you figure the longer you leave a stain on somewhere the harder it's going to be to wash off, I try to power wash my wheels when I have the time.

does that brake dust repellant crap work? I saw it at autozone.

In regards to wheel wax, I'm just expecting it to make cleaning the wheels easier.

I don't know much about the heat aspect. It's just what I read. It seemed to make sense, but so does the comment about a black car sitting in the sun all day.

I applied my first coat on Sunday. We'll see how it goes. It looks really nice for now.
