Throttle Body Cleaning... Now CEL

Hello,

I did a throttle body cleaning today. The car has about 53,000 miles. I saw the DIY video but was not aware that our throttle bodies were this sensitive.

I did the accelerator pedal, throttle valve, and idle air learning procedures but still get a high idle CEL. When I first tried it, I got a CEL right after performing the procedure. So I pulled the battery and did it again.

The CEL went away but the idle was alittle high. I turned off the car and started again and am getting the CEL again. I am in the process of performing another restart.

What do you guys recommend I do? I still have my original warranty on the car. Could the TB be covered under warranty? I would like to hear your opinions. Thanks.

First get the CEL error code read at any auto parts store (free service) and make sure the culprit of the CEL is the throttle body and not something else. If it is something else, you'll have to do more info search on the problem.

Is this covered under warranty? Or do I have to pay them for the service? I cleaned the TB so I think they would have an idea that it has been touched.

Maybe stupid, but did you double check that you plugged it back in tight?

Everything is hooked up. The only harnesses that I removed are the TB and the MAF. If there is anything I missed, please let me know.

I drove the car for about 100 miles today. First, I drove with the CEL on. It was idling at around 1200-1300 during stops. I drove 50 miles and got fed up with the jerking and high idle so I did the accelerator pedal, throttle valve, and idle air learning procedures again. This turned the CEL off.

I drove for another 50 miles and everything was good except the idle was not at 700 rpm but was around 950 rpm. I shut the car off and later drove to do some errands. Then the CEL came on. I did the pedal, throttle, and idle learning procedure before I started the engine but the CEL still came on.

I am getting frustrated with this CEL. I can't believe the TB is this sensitive. Makes me feel like Nissan tried to make some money off this part. I would like to hear your suggestions. Thanks.

You're going to have to keep trying the idle relearn because you're not getting it yet. The idle on a warm engine will be no more than 600rpms on the tach. If the tach shows 700rpms or higher, then you need to keep trying until you get it right. The process has to be timed correctly. I've had the same problem before and my idle kept showing 800 to 900rpms which was too high. I finally got the relearn procedure down and the idle showed 600rpms. Another you'll notice if the idle is incorrect, is a higher engine braking idle as you slow down from 10mph. The higher braking idle will make the car jerky as you're slowing down below 10mph.

Did you go to a parts store and get the code read?

In CA, the parts stores will not let you rent OBD II scanners. The mechanics filed a claim saying they are taking there business.

The car is idling just under 1000 rpm - while driving and when performing the procedures listed below.

When i punch my gas to a higher rpm from idling, as the rpms come down back to 1000, it jumps up to 1500 and then settles back to 1000. Is this normal?

Here is how I do the relearn procedure. My car is a 6MT. I don't know if I should be pressing the clutch or not.

Accelerator Pedal Release Position Learning
1) Leave ACC pedal "as is”
2) Turn IGN switch “ON” – at least 2 sec
3) Turn IGN switch “OFF” – at least 10 sec
4) Turn IGN switch “ON” – at least 2 sec
5) Turn IGN switch “OFF” – at least 10 sec

Wait 10 sec for next procedure

Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning
1) Leave ACC pedal “as is”
2) Turn IGN switch “ON” – appr 3-4 sec
3) Turn IGN switch “OFF” – at least 10 sec

Wait 10 sec for next procedure

Idle Air Volume Learning
1) Leave ACC pedal “as is”
2) Start engine and warm up to operating temp – temp gauge around middle
3) Turn IGN switch “OFF” – at least 10 sec
4) Turn IGN switch “ON” – 3 sec
5) Fully depress and release ACC pedal – 5 times within 5 sec
6) Wait 7 sec
7) Fully depress ACC pedal for appr 20 sec – during this time CEL blinks
8) When CEL light is “ON”, not blinking – fully release ACC pedal
9) Turn the engine “ON” within 3 sec
10) Start engine and idle
11) Wait 20 sec
12) Rev engine 2-3 times and check IDLE and TIMING

IDLE = 950 rpm
TIMING = ? – don’t have a tool to check

Let me know if I am doing anything wrong. Thanks.

I'm a service consultant for Infiniti of Santa Monica. Give me a call and I'll have one of my techs check it out. Call me at 310-500-1516, I'm George by the way.

Believe it or not, our detailers screwed up a several of T/B after detailing the engine bay.

One thing you might want to check is that you secured the throttle body with a new gasket and in the correct order 1,2,3,4 as opposed to 4,3,2,1 for removal. Unless you subjected the throttle body to shock or impact, I doubt it would just fail on its own.
