Weird Issue with Gas Gauge...

Okay....was driving on the highway when all of a sudden my gas gauge goes from half tank to dead empty. I flipped on the nav screen to the fuel economy section and it first displayd 89 miles to empty and then 5 and then ****. I was over 20 miles to the nearest exit or service plaza. I ended up drafting a semi at like 55 to see how far I could go (thinking maybe a fuel hose broke or something similar).

I got to the servie plaza and filled up with only 10 gallons of gas meaning the gauge was wrong and I still did in fact have half a tank in there. (I did check for leaks or traces of gas everywhere).

So, I am guessing it was a computer glitch. Anyone have this problem before? After the fill up and restart, everything seems to be normal again. I had no idea the gas gauge was electronic....still thought we had the whole bobber thing. lol

Anyways, anyone have any expeience with this?

Thanks

Jason

Yeah, the gas gauge is weird in these things. It always looks like I use a lot fast and then the last half seems to last forever... the opposite of most cars.

1997-2004 Corvettes are common with this. My 2000 had this issue. It's the fuel sensors in those cars, 2 per car. My extended warranty covered my repair. Try Techron additive, and Chevron gas on top of that. It helped many of the Vette owners, but not me.

I have never had that problem, however something similiar. My gas gauge would show only half of what was in the tank. This lead to a few fill ups where I thought I would take 15 or so gallons when it would only take 8-10. I brought it to Infiniti and turns out it was a bad fuel sensor. Thus reading the incorrect fuel limit. I had it replaced and everything is fine. I have an 03 Coupe. Something you might want to check into.

One of your two fuel sensors is not working which was a common problem for earlier G35's. Your dealer will replace your entire fuel tank under warranty.

This happened to my car ('03 coupe) when I first bought it (used). It turned out that there is a sensor in the fuel filler neck, which is connected to the gas tank, that was bad. The dealership had to replace the entire fuel neck and gas tank (under warranty). They said that it was a common problem and only took a day to get it fixed. Good luck!
