Sorry Sal, been away all day today.

I usually just go with the regular Mobil 1 5w-30 when it's on sale in quantities at either Costco or Walmart. It's not that I think the M1 is the the absolute end-all as far as oils go; it's more that I really don't think it matters as much as you'd think from all the hype people put into the debates. If you are using a reasonably good, name brand synthetic, you're gonna be fine. Save yourself the worry, your car will NOT be prematurely entering the junkyard due to poor lubrication issues. The rest is pretty much all hype; PERIOD!

btw, there is nothing wrong with dino oil either, providing it's changed more frequently, it will do just as well. I just prefer not to change my oil as often is all.

I agree, pretty much any oil these days will work fine for the HR's -- it all depends on frequency of the change and how much stress you're putting on the engine and fluids.

I personally use M1-EP, i need to update my UOA results thread soon, it's missing an entry or two, but you should get an idea for how it's performing.

^^ That's fine Sal, but it's probably about $10 cheaper at Walmart.

I got extra bolts! I have heard they are b1tch to do them! I got the tools and the skills! I just lack the time! I need the whole day just in case I encounter any complications! I did my Akebonos and that wasn't easy at all!

Larger oil filter that works with the VQ35HR engine

I was poking around the V36 DIY threads recently because I posted a DIY fog light to DRL for the V36 with A/T and read through the oil change posts. Apparently no one in this thread noted it, but about two years ago I posted elsewhere in the 35driver.com forums that as soon as I got my 2007 G35X I felt that the stock oil filter on the VQ35HR engine was way too small. I couldn’t understand why, because there’s plenty of room down there. I did the research and found the largest oil filter that fits this engine with the proper thread, gasket and oil bypass specs. I’ve been running with the larger oil filter for three years now. I usually get the PureOne, but I look for sales and use the M1-207 when I can.

Here’s a listing of larger oil filters that fit the VQ35HR engine.
Purolator PureOne: PL14619
K&N: HP-2007
Napa: 1324
Wix: 51324
Mobil: M1-207
Bosch: 3401

Exactly!

I have always suspected there was a perfectly good reason the Nissan engineers deliberately selected the filter size they did, and that it wasn't merely because of economy or to better suit little hands. My guess is it has something to do with issues like maintaining proper oil pressure, minimizing potential drain-back consequences after long term sititng, etc., etc..

I too was initially concerned about filter sizing, and actually cut open a few filters after a 7500 mile OCI, but was relieved to find the filter media still in very good condition; not at all saturated with residue. I concluded the size must therefore be adequate for at least as long as I'd ever run without a filter change. So, rather than second guess at what the engineers intended, I'll just keep running the original size. (NOTE: if you go to WIX site, they will also spec a small size filter, even though they theoretically know perfectly well which of their filters can fit.)

That being said, I know lot of people run a larger filter without any apparent consequences, so it isn't like anything radical is going to happen with running a larger filter. I just question the long term effects and wonder if any potential benefits outweigh potential concerns. For me, they don't, but YMMV.

I've used the bigger filters for the M45/M56 for several years now, my Blackstones w/ Synthetic at 6-7k OCI have been very good. This is w/ my 07 G35 and my current G37.

Currently I'm using Wix 57356 (since they had a killer pkg deal @ O'Reillys a while back.)
