Is this possible?

I was wondering if there was any way to wire the power to the head unit (any head unit, oem or aftermarket) so that when i start the car from the "on" position, the power won't shut off when i start the engine? Like when i get gas i leave the radio on, but when i finish and start the car up, the power cuts off and my head unit has to re-boot again.

I doubt that its possible because you're switching from all battery power when key is on ACC to all alternator power when engine is running. This will happen no matter what you do. If you wired it to always run off the battery, your battery would die. You would probably need another battery to run it off during the switch, and even then there is going to be a noticeable interruption.

Not worth it.

Just wire the ACC wire from the radio to the battery.

But that will allow you to leave the radio on with the key out...

You might be able to try a remote start button, not sure if/how that would work since the key is chipped, but effectively you'd be using the button to start the car without turning the key any further than it is already at the 'ignition' setting.

You'd want a decent pushbutton switch and a helluva relay, and have a good understanding of what you're doing. Logic suggests that provided you tap into the starter circuit after the chip sensor, this might work, but do this at your own risk.

Oh and do this at your own risk. Good luck!

To the OP:

I am interesting in knowing why you want to accomplish this. I have no suggestions to provide... sorry about that. Just curious.

All you have to do is switch the ACC lead on the radio to an IGN lead. There are three types of power feeds in a car:

1. 12vdc hot - 12vdc all the time
2. IGN - 12vdc in the on and crank position
3. ACC - 12vdc in the On position only

Keep in mind that the car was purposefully designed to act the way it does (cut power to non vital accessories during cranking). I doubt having just the radio on during cranking would cause any problems, but I wouldn't add much more of a load, especially if you live in a cold climate or don't drive the car very often.

Unless your running 1/0 guage to a massive 3000watt amp and a couple 15"s when you start your car...

Thanks! i'll have to try that when i get the chance. I live in sunny ol southern california, so i'm not too worried about any below freezing temperature over here.

Given the massive current drain when you engage the starter motor, couldn't that in some way damage the radio or electronic equipment? Having voltage and amperage flucuate frequently?

Typically OEM electronic devices have very stiff power suppplies on them that will enable them to survive the harsh electrical environment that a car provides. Several of the modules that KPtechnologies sell are connected to hot power and we've never seen a power supply damaged, and we use a very basic power system compared to what Nissan uses.
