Garmin Nuvi 660 Navigation Unit

Does anyone have one of these yet? or has anyone recently ordered one? Just found out from cavu that this is a new unit that just came out and is an upgrade from the current 350 and 360 models. It's got more bells & whistles and more importantly, it has a 4.3" widescreen display in lieu of the standard 3.5" display.

I'm about to pull the trigger on one after finding the best price online ($750) but was interested if anyone has one, as I'm curious if there's a way to mount this unit in the location of the OEM nav (like can be done with the 350). I think the only feature that may not allow this unit to be mounted in this fashion is the mount..it's quite larger & has an integrated docking station feature, so not sure if it'll fit.

Hey Jimmy,

I checked out the pix in the link I sent you on the other thread. The mount for the 660 looks a little different than the one I have for the 350. The little rectangular shaped piece of the mount looks a little thicker which would be ok to mount it like I did. The problem is that it looks like they made the suction cup piece with a fixed arm on the 660, not the swivel arm that I have. If this is true then it will give you problems mounting it in the cubbie.

You can check the Nuvi forum here and see if anyone talks specifically about the mount. They also have user reviews about the unit.

Good luck,

Cavu,

Thanks..I kinda concluded the same thing you did...that mount looks kinda bulky and also looks fixed. I may just get the 660 anyways....I haven't owned a nav before, and would imagine the dash mount or suction cup mount would suffice as well...just really liked your setup.

Thumbs up

I just replaced my NUVI 350 with the Nuvi 660 in my '06 G35 Sedan. I had the 350 and now have the 660 mounted like CAVU does in his G. The only thing extra I did was add a magnet mount external antenna on the trunk lid and ran the coax up to the dask and hard wired the power to the fuse block. 1 small hole in the bottom of the cubby hole was good enoug to route the wiring.

The only comment I have is that the display on the 660 is more "brillant" or brighter than the 350. The 350 though had a great display. The 660 just fits due to it's increased width.

If I remember, I will take a picture tonite and post it.

CAVU thanks for your idea BTW!

Rich,

Nice! Now that I've had it for a week, I really find mounting it below the rear view mirror really obstructs the view out of my windshield more than I would like to (seems unsafe). I've contemplated on mounting it that way that you just did too.

So you glued the metal disc to the front/inside part of the cubby & then just suction cupped it to that? I'd like to hardwire mine also and found out from a GPS review forum that I can do so by purchasing the 12-volt AC adapter cord online & using this for hardwiring. Is that what you used?

I was going to pay to have someone to do it, but I'd love to tackle this one myself...do you think you can send me some details on how you installed the wire (i.e. how to hardwire it to the fuse box, how to run the cord from the cubby/small hole down to below the steering wheel over to the fuse box? I'd really appreciate it.

JimmyC13, If you buy a spare 12v adapter, I got mine from TheGPSstroe.com, you can unscrew the tip and you will find, unlike the 12v adapter for the NUVI350, is just a fuse holder. Garmin send 12v right to the mounting bracket. I just cut off the fuse holder and wired it to the fuse block.

I used a fuse that had a "pig tail" attached and replaced the cigarette lighter fuse. The power for the NUVI now goes off with the ignition, along with the power for my cell phone.

And yes I took the addhesive disc that came with the NUVI and just attached it to the front top surface of the cubby hole. It works real well.

Texasscout, I will get the original from my computer at home and send it to you.

Thanks Rich...

And what is the easiest way to run/locate the wire, once I put a hole in the bottom of the cubby? I've never taken my center console apart & not sure if it's required, but what's the easiest way to get the wire from the cubby & out, towards the fuse box?

Rich,

You said you went from the Nuvi350 to the 660 and mounted it like I did. Did you use the suction cup mount from the 350 to do it? It looks like the one for the 660 doesn't swivel so I wouldn't have thought that it would work.

Cavu - there is a ball swivel joint on the suction cup mount for the 660 (comes in the box). The dash mount (doesn't come with the nav stock) does not have a swivel.

Skinnyguy12 - search for posts made by cavu...he has picts of his 350 mounted in the cubby! Maybe nr2d will post some picts of his 660 mounted there too?

Nr2d - whaddya say?

For those who don't read threads (like # 12 above), I went ahead & located the link (took me all of 2 seconds) so others don't keep asking for it.....
