audio upgrade question...

Hey everyone.
Due to the crappy mid-range speakers our cars have (Bose), I've decided to go ahead and purchase a setup from Polk Audio. Can someone give me some feedback on these :

http://www.polkaudio.com/car/product.php?name=db6500

Size wise (coupe doors) , ohm, Hz, depth etc.

Am I looking not only at a good system, but also a system that will physically match my doors and match the amp specs?

Thanks in advance.

dont bother changing just your speakers. It will still sound like crap for the most part. Unless you add an external amp as well, you will not notice much difference. Save up and get a new amp as well.

I disagree. Change just the speakers for now. They will definitely improve the sound. If you still aren't fully satisfied, then you can always change the amp later.

I changed my doors to Alpine SPX comps and noticed an immediate improvement in the sound, well worth the time and effort. BUT it was part of an extended, comprehensive audio makeover.

A new amp DEFINITELY will improve the sound even more (I just finished installing a Soundstream Rubicon 80x4 amp), and you may eventually feel a need to do it, but speakers alone are a great, relatively inexpensive upgrade.

I would also like to add that although they may sound better to some extent, underpowering speakers is not a good idea and the bose system will definitely underpower any set of comps you replace the stock speakers with. I honestly feel that it is not worth the money to just add new speakers to a system that is insufficient.

There is no way to match any pair of speakers to the amp specs of the bose which is why i stated that the amp needs to be replaced as well. Im not saying it wont sound better to some extent, but it probably wont sound as good as you think...save up for a new amp and then you will be much more satisfied.

i have to agree with gsaudio. It has something to do with resistance and impedance rating. This have been discuss before i believe.

Re: audio upgrade question...

Wait a minute, I don't think our positions are mutually exclusive.

I agree that an AMP upgrade is in order. "audioman" is right, you'd be underpowering the new comps, and they'll definitely sound better with better amplification.

I don't however think that (and since I've done it myself, and have heard the difference) it's "necessary". You can achieve better sound by doing just the speakers. The best would be to scrap Bose altogether and upgrade everything (amp/spkrs/ add a subwoofer/ active EQ).

There is no downside if you do the install yourself...change the spkrs now, then if still not good enough, spring for the amp too.

BTW I just changed my entire system,,,Soundstream amp/Focal Polyglass comps/Audiocontrol EQ/Infinity Basslink...but over the course of 6 weeks [spkrs first/basslink next/now amp and EQ].

Next comes the 6 week tuning phase!
Anyone have a spectrum analyzer I can borrow? :-)
