My New NAV SETUP (idea)

Hey Guys,

I didn't opt for the NAV package, regretting it now. However, check out my idea:

Parts THAT I HAVE:
-------------------------------
1) I recently purchased the new Nextel i730 which is GPS enabled
2) I have a very good laptop - P4 1.6 ghz laptop with 256 DDR ram.

Parts NEEDED
------------------------
1) Phone to PC data cable from motorola ($20)
2) NAV PC Software (anyone have or recommend anything?)

OBJECTIVE:

With the help of GPS and a laptop w/ nav equipped software, I can have navigation like you guys with it already, and I will view it on a 14" SCREEN!

What do you guys think, will it work out? Anyone tried it or something similar?

Re: My New NAV SETUP (idea)

looks like the i730 does have the gps ability.. i question how well it works as far as a gps reciever.. but heck for the cost of the data cable it is worth a try..

as for software.. i dunno... microsoft has some i think.. delorme has some.. i would look for one with a dvd containing the maps if your laptop has a dvd.. I currently have some software for my pocketpc with maps on cds.. but each cd only has about 1/4 of the state.. it works i guess but nicer to keep on one dvd..

might be able to find a trial of some gps software.. just to test how the acquiring of signals is.. Like i said i have a pocketpc with gps.. and honestly it sucks hehe.. without an external antenna to boost the signal its ridiculous getting locked on.. with the extra ant it still takes anywhere from 1min+... might not seem bad, but when you hop in yoru car and you wanna route somewhere.. sucks sitting there in your driveway waiting to get the signal.. and if you start moving it just makes it even harder to get a signal.. ugh! heh.. I dunno what the stock nav units do.. I didnt get much of a chance to check them out.. just in a car i test drove.. seemed like as soon as it started up it had the gps signal... might just run all the time.. cause keeping the signal is easy just getting it is a bear..

I'm not up-to-date on the phones but my Nextel I88 takes forever to get it's gps signal.

For Nav Software, Copilot is the best

but the Street Atlas with a GPS receiver works well also. Copilot is about 2x as much money though. I have a pc in my G already, just tryin to decide which nav software to go with as well. 200$ is gettin up there.

I think the laptop based systems that have their own GPS antenna will be best. But there's another area you need to address. Where is the laptop going to go while you're driving? You going to get one of those mounts like in police cars? A system that installs in the nav pocket would certainly be a whole lot more money; but it would be alot more usable.
