Upgrading Premium Stereo

Hey Everyone,

Just got an 04 G35 Sedan AT with the Premium Bose system. I didn't think the rumors were true until I heard the system myself but it doesn't sound nearly as good as a bose system should. In fact it kinda sucks

So because of that i am thinking of upgrading my system a bit and have a few questions.

1. I am not looking to upgade to show quality stuff just want great sound. Can someone recommend a good brand of speakers, and apmlifier I could use with my stock head unit? I was also going to add some sound dampening like dynomat or some other brand.

2. Also Is there any part of the Bose sytem that I should consider keeping? and just replace certain parts.

-Bill

Speakers are a personal preference depending on your ear and your wallet.

Go to a couple of local stereo shops and listen to some that are within your price range. you can also order online at Crutchfield.com and other places. If you aren't doing the install yourself, go to a local shop.

The speakers are 6 1/2 inch separates up front and you can use a 6 1/2 inch coaxial in the rear doors.

A lot will also depend on how far you want to go. Do you want to add an amp(s) and sub or just replace the door speakers.

The OEM head unit is made by Clarion and isn't too bad. You can keep it and add an aftermarket amp and speakers and do alright. You will need a JDM conversion kit to replace the OEM head unit with a double DIN unit.

You can go from mild to wild. What suits you?

In my sedan, I kept the OEM head unit and replaced the door speakers and sub (added, not replaced the OEM sub) and added an amp. Just tap into the input wired before they go into the Bose amp. You can remove the Bose amp altogether and use it for a Frisbee too.

There are wiring diagrams for the Bose units posted around here somewhere.

The Bose sub is about an 8 inch. Regardless, it's not worth using. I have a 4080 sedan box with a 12 that works well. www.4080enclosures.com

What size speakers should I go with in my G coupe? obviously 6.5"s in the doors, but what about the back section of the car? i have a speaker in the back deck that is making some aweful noise's and I need to do something soon.

Aslo, my head unit is starting to mess up. it will play most of a cd, but then it will just stop playing and skip to the next cd. any idea what is wrong?

If your car is still under warranty, take it to the dealer.

If you are out of warranty, get a DD head unit.

I think it is best to remove the 6x9's from the rear deck if you put a sub in the trunk so more sound can get into the car. If you don't remove them, at least don't use them.

The speakers in the sides in the rear are 6.5's.

im not really sure if i want to do an amp and sub, but you think i shoud just ditch the stock radio? where can i find the dash kit/instillation kit to get an aftermarket radio in the car? i have the kenwood i can put in there, but i dont want to loose my factory navigation and i really like the steering wheel controls.

You can keep all of that, with a little bit of money of course.

The only thing you'll lose on the nav is the voice and you can get that to work if you really miss it.

The steering wheel controls can also be used with an aftermarket head unit.

You don't have to ditch the stock radio if you don't want to. You may be able to buy one from one of the Driver members. If you buy a new radio from the dealer, then you might as well get a DD kit and radio.

You can retain your steering wheel controls. And you can power your speakers with the new radio if you don't want to run an amp, but you will lose the sub.
