Did it tear all the way around or just in a small spot, if its a small spot, likely something in your trunk ripped the surround rather than the sub actually blowing it. The rip was probably significantly smaller, but the sub movement probably kept enlarging it until you noticed. Surrounds, especially on high end subs rarely fail nowadays, and when they do it usually the result of delamination rather than actual tearing

is it protected? did anyhting ahppen when it ws installed?
a common installer mistake is whent hey are screwing the sub in, they slip and jab the surround. often, this will make only a tiny indent or invisible hole in the surround, so they dont realize or say anyhting...
but then over time, as said above, it gets larger and larger...
the only way a surround will fail on something like a w6 due to normal usage, no overpowering, is the entire surround delaminating and coming off the basket of the sub, again as mentioned above
