A/C AUTO vs. A/C AUTO ECON?

Anybody know what the difference is between A/C AUTO and A/C AUTO ECON modes shown in the display?

The manual doesn't say what the difference is between the two modes. My guess is that in the ECON mode the compressor never comes on even though the display shows "A/C AUTO ECON". Shouldn't it just say "A/C ECON" instead?

Re: A/C AUTO vs. A/C AUTO ECON?

Hi VettRN, I've had a look at my O/M and on 4-4 of the Dec.2002 issue it explains the (ECON) operation: It seems it reduces some load to the engine ( better F/E), but allows higher humidity than the normal mode. It also shows the operation changes when pushing the button:
AUTO>ECON>AUTO. I think that when ECON is selected, the compressor is still functioning but at a reduced effectiveness, manual type mode.:P) Also when I have mine on ECON I can hear the compressor cycling on and off.
That's the way I read it, anyway. Hope this helps
What did you decide on the wing issue?

Yes, I believe that in Econ mode, the compressor cycles on and off.

Re: A/C AUTO vs. A/C AUTO ECON?

Still on the fence with the spoiler gsedanman. The AeroKit is still on order at the dealer, and he said that I can cancel it anytime. Since "Baby" is really the wife's car, I think I'm going to let her make the final decision. I showed her all the responses to my post and even threw in my own comment about using it as a "handle" to make opening the trunk easier . But I think she is going to have to see it before she decides.

I'll have to check my manual again to see if it has the same date as yours. What was throwing me was the way the display shows it. It goes from A/C AUTO to A/C AUTO ECON. I was thinking that the ECON mode should be separate, sort of like the "VENT" mode on other vehicles. From what you and gordgee are saying, It sounds like when A/C AUTO is displayed, the compressor runs all the time. But when A/C AUTO ECON is displayed the compressor cycles on/off depending on the demand like in a "normal" system, I guess the "VENT" mode (no compressor) is activated by just turning off the A/C with the A/C button.

Re: A/C AUTO vs. A/C AUTO ECON?

I think that's it. The ECON mode is for light A/C needs, such as when the weather's just a little warm and humid instead of 'stinking' when you'll need the full AUTO mode.I haven't played with this one yet, but the Sedan was like that too. Most of the time I didn't need full Auto.
The more I live with 'Miss S' without a wing, the more I like her clean lines. It's a personal thing really, and if I'd had my 'druthers' I'd have had one.:P) BTW, If it were my car I'd personally not use the wing as a closer or opener, altho very tempting to do so. Might be a little fragile to yank it aroung like that long term. Just a suggestion.
Enjoy your A/C and warmer humid weather. Most of us up here in the 'Tundra' can't wait for a taste of that again.
For now I'm enjoying heating up the garage and Zainoing my baby during blizzard conditions. and perhaps driving a little on 'good' days.
Have you got the Service Manual from Nissan you ordered?
I need a spec from it if you do.: I'm going to check the Ignition timing on the Coupe soon and don't know the spec. If you would have a look for me, I'd appreciate it. Should be in Basic Service Procedures/Igniton tmg. Thanks.

Re: A/C AUTO vs. A/C AUTO ECON?

The compressor isn't necessarily active even if A/C Auto is showing, ONLY if in order to reach the set Auto temperature, A/C is needed, ie. if like us Canuks, it's COLD outside, the compressor isn't running (except on defrost above a certain threshold temperature).
In contrast, in the last model IS300, in Auto, the A/C had to be pushed separately to operate which was kind of counter-intuitive.

Re: A/C AUTO vs. A/C AUTO ECON?

Thanks again guys..... The manuals arrived yesterday safe & sound. The first place I looked was in the A/C section, and that was no help explaining the A/C AUTO ECON mode either. I must be having a brain gas-expulsion or something, because it just doesn't make sense to me. I thought I had it figured out, and then gordgee throws me a curve. I haven't had time to play with it on the car, to see what it is actually doing, but I am determined to figure this out.

I'll look up the timing spec 4U after I get home gsedanman. Probably won't be for a while, but you should have it by tomorrow. And no, if we get the spoiler, we won't use it as a handle to open the trunk.

We're having the opposite problem that you guys up North are having. We're putting too many miles on the car. Would you believe over 2,000 miles since the last weekend in December. But is it ever fun!!
