04 Coupe Stock Upgrade with $1200?
Re: 04 Coupe Stock Upgrade with $1200?
Congrats on your G Al. What color did you get? Auto or MT?
I went to my local Car Spa handwash and lo and behold I bumped into another G. Talked to him. Turned out he is VinNYCG from these forums. Anyway VinNYCG got a 8w7 in his trunk and let me look. Holy Cow. That sucker takes up 2/3 of the trunk. Also he tells me he is having some acceleration power issues when he has his sub turned on.
Al I may be becoming a pain in the *** about now but I am rethinking my entire stereo upgrade strategy and once again require your expertise. Here we go...
- Screw the friggin sub. I need my trunk.
- I have the MB Quart QM 6.5 comps and Infinity 6.5 coax's
- Also have the JL 500/5
1. I will change the 6x9's. Pls recommend.
2. Also recommend an amp if the JL isnt sufficient. Hmm speaking of that...
3. Will the stock Bose amp be sufficent for the speakers I have chosen without the need for the JL amp?
4. How about just an equalizer installed along with the speakers with the stock amp (no JL). I dont like those complicated EQ's that mount in the trunk. I am thinking of something like the Kenwood KGC-6042A. Will this be good?

Re: 04 Coupe Stock Upgrade with $1200?
you're not a pain in the butt. I got the black/black 6 MT with premium. It's nice. Fewer rattles than my old sedan and it doesn't freakin' pull to the right.
On to your questions.
1. infinity kappa 6x9. inexpensive but great quality.
2. 500/5 should be great. don't change it.
3. You could probably run the coax's and even the new 6x9 with the stock amp. Even though the infinity's are efficient, I would still make sure that they are getting good clean power. The QM's should get at least 75 watts rms or more.
4. equalizer's are great if you like to fine tune. I would try the system first and add on if you're not satisfied with the stock head units adjustments.
Don't hesitate to ask any more questions.

Re: 04 Coupe Stock Upgrade with $1200?
Another thing on EQ's - I have a 7-band Alpine EQ running off of my Pioneer right now (in my Honda Prelude - don't laugh - the G is coming soon) and it sounds great.... BUT.... if you buy a new head unit (a good one, that is), one that has a 7-band EQ built-in and you can adjust it, get that instead. It means less wires, less interference and a better/crisper sound in the end. You'll get less "wheeez" the fewer wires you have, shielded or not. I was going to get the double-din and add an EQ, but it appears now I'm going to get a head unit that has a good EQ already integrated with it. It also has presets, but what I'm looking for is a manual EQ (7-band) - and it's available. Look into Alpine - they have some good ones that are like this. Here is one such head unit: <a href=http://iweb.alpine-usa.com/pls/admn/item_info?p_item_name=CDA-7897&p_category=10&p_subcategory=45&p_main=10&p_mo re=y>CDA-7897</a> <--- [Click on the link]. Good luck.... counting down the days..... <sigh>
Re: 04 Coupe Stock Upgrade with $1200?
Thanks but to get a totally different head unit and double din dash replacement thing would run me at least 600-700. From what I understand the double din piece for the G coupe setup goes for a few hundred for the entire kit. I have neither the time nor the patience to do it myself and I dont trust anyone to go messing with my dash so I am keeping the stock head unit.
Plus I do love being able to control it from my steering wheel. I doubt aftermarket head units will be accessible from the stock steering wheel controls.

Re: 04 Coupe Stock Upgrade with $1200?
Thank Al,
One note though, for the rear of my coupe I bought the Infiniti 63.5i 6 1/2 coax's.
There are two models for Infiniti Kappas. 62.5i and 63.5i
The 63 that I bought is the onewhich adds a supertweeter in it.
1) Is this good? Will it fit?
I am keeping the 500/5 JL audio Amp and the MB Quarts comps and these Infinitis if you say.
The only things left for me to purchase are the peripheral ven 4 and the 6x9's.
Now from what I understand, the 500/5 has 5 channels so I am assuming 4 of those will go to front and rear cabin.
2) What will power the 6x9's? The stock Bose amp?
I mentioned I wont do a sub because trunk space is crucial. I have been looking at those bazooka tubes today. They seem like they may leave more trunk space than a sub with a box.
This is the model I am considering. http://www.woofersetc.com/product.as...3&1=619&3=2121
I know its cheezy. But I like its cosmetic appeal.
3) Will a bazooka run satisfactory being powered by the remaining sub channel on the 500/5? Whats your take on Bazookas?
I also did consider the possibility of switching the 6x9's and mounting some free-air 8 in subs in place of them as I have read somewhere that it works.
4) If I go this route rather than bazooka, how will two 8's be powered by the remaining one sub channel of the 500/5?
Man I tell ya, I didnt know a thing before I started this thread. Now I am speaking in a new language to friends and family and theyre wondering where I learned it.

Re: 04 Coupe Stock Upgrade with $1200?
Yo Black screw the trunk man, get the 8w7, LoL nah I m jokin. Get that Bazooka NOS Tube, or some cats are using that Infinity Basslink...I dunno I gotta hear it when u finish it cuz the mids n highs is gonna be killin' it. Oh and them dudes did a great job and the car, I think I found a new car wash..
Re: 04 Coupe Stock Upgrade with $1200?
1. the only difference between the kappas is the extra tweeter on the 63.5i. You shouldn't have any problems with clearance. Clarification: You will have to make a slight modification but you will have to do that with any 6 1/2 coax. The stock speaker has a ~2" bracket that lets the magnet clear the side of the car. You can either cut out the stock speaker and use that bracket or you can get little blocks of plastic or wood or whatever and put it between the car bracket and the speaker bracket. I used a wood dowel that was cut in equal lengths and put a little foam on the ends. You can get a longer screws at any hardware store to screw it into place. Hope this made sense.
2. The sub out (250 watts) will power the 6x9's if you go that way. 250 watts will be enough to power a couple of 6x9's. You'll have to wire them in parallel down to a 2 ohm load if they are both 4 ohm to start with, but that is not a problem. It's actually a good thing. You'll get a little more power out your amp this way. You don't want to wire it in series, which will increase them to 8 ohms. None of the slash amps are designed to work optimally at 8 ohms.
3. Bazooka tubes are not that great in terms of anything in my opinion. If you want to do this, get the infinity basslink.
4. you could power 2 8" subs off of the sub output. Again, it will be in parallel.
Instead of trying to explain the wiring differences between parallel and series, look on jlaudio.com. They have a very informative tutorial section that will explain it better than I can.
Good luck and keep the questions coming.

Re: 04 Coupe Stock Upgrade with $1200?
I think people have had good luck with JL 8" free air sub. I think it was called the IB8 or something like that. Unfortunately, JL doesn't make them anymore. You can find them on ebay ocassionally. I'll look into this a little more.
Re: 04 Coupe Stock Upgrade with $1200?
How many peripheral ven4's do I need? The web link u gave to acquire this gadget states this thing is good for 4 channels and 45 watts per channel max or something to that extent. I am buying all this stuff and wont be doing the install myself. I will find a reputable installer somewhre here in NYC with G experience to do the work for me.

Al,
Whats your take on these 8's?
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-LeEzU3X...=0&cc=01&avf=N
ot this 10 sub. It looks like a nice compact clean enclosure. What do you think of it?

Re: 04 Coupe Stock Upgrade with $1200?
That polk does look like a pretty good deal for a plug and play sub. You won't have to worry about getting an enclosure etc. If you go this route, just make sure that you are happy with the dimensions of the box.
Another sub that I would take a look at is the Infinity Kappa Perfect 10". You can get them off of ebay for $120 shipped and they provide great bang for the buck.
