Subwoofer/Amp suggestions

I know many of you guys only drop an amp or two to upgrade your Bose system but, I've gone a different route. I first replaced my fromt speakers with a set of Boston Acoustic separate compnents and a JL 75 watt amp. I wasn't driving the car much but, oh well it's Summer and I'm driving it more often. The place that did my speakers suggested a crazy Jl amp and a 12" B.A. sub. Lots of work will be involved and they will have to move the amp to make room for the new one. Cost is not a factor since I knew going in that it was going to be a 2-3K job (altogether). I listen to 80's Metal, pop and rock (no rap, EVER). I also listen to Classical every now and then. My question is, do I need a carzy powerful amp and a big @ss 12" subwoofer? Wouldn't an 8" or a 10" be just as effective. I know I need it to complete the sound because my highs and mids sound great but the bass, not SO GOOD. Thanks for your advise, I will be doing something real soon.

You don't NEED a 12. I had plenty of bass from my one 10w6 and I listen to mostly hip hop and club music.

One of your best options would be to purchase an enclosure from www.4080enclosures.com and have the shop install a 10 inch sub. With the right choice of amp, the shop can mount the amp under the floor and you';; have almost all of your trunk space. You could get a single 5 channel amp to run the entire system if you want.

If your not into bass like that then a single 10 subwoofer will get the job done. It sounds like you are more into a clean sounding system with just enough bass for when you need it. As Giley suggested look into a nice 5 channel amp to pwer your sub and components and you should be all set.

I have a Boston Amp and a Boston Pro 10. I think it was a perfect addition. I definatly prefer the 10 over the 12. I listen to a lot of Rock and heavy metal and the 10 just has a way better sound...

But if you want more bass, you can always add another 4080 enclosure on the other side. Two 10s > one 12.

Exactly the type of advice that I needed. Any suggestions on the type of JL amp needed? I mean power-wise? Don't think I should go over 75 or 100 watt total power on the sub. I mean to match the one I already have for the fronts.

What amp are you running with that subwoofer?

It takes more wattage to move a subwoofer than it does small front speakers. You need at least 200 - 250 watts, depending on the sub you get. It is normal for a sub amp to have much more wattage than the front speakers.

The JL 500/5 or the new Alpine PDX 5 channel amp will work great for your application.

4080, 10w3, and a 250/1 would satisfy you.

Since the 4080 enclosure for the coupe only fits a 10 inch sub, I don't think it will be easy to make a 12w6 fit. A 10w6 fits nicely in the 4080 enclosure.

Why would he want a 12w6 if he's not looking for a ton of bass?

I recommended the 10w3 because I thought the 10w6 was more than he was looking for.

I picked up a 10w3 as well. More than enough base. I listen to a lot of rock and hip-hop and I am happy.
