Does upgrading to a Double-Din Stereo improve sound quality?

Hey Guys,

I'm thinking about purchasing a Double-Din In dash DVD receiver, the Alpine IVA-w505 to be exact, and I was wondering if anybody here has done just the Double Din receiver upgrade by itself and noticed an increase in the sound quality of the stock Bose speakers.

Reason I'm asking is because a good friend of mine, who is an expert installer, said that by just upgrading the stereo, that you actually degrade/downgrade the sound quality of the stock speakers, thus making it sound worse than just keeping the stock stereo.

Has anyone here upgraded ONLY the stereo and nothing else. And what did the sound system sound like after just that one upgrade. Any input would be greatly appreciated guys. Thanks.

I recently ditched the Bose head unit in my 04 coupe and replaced it with an economical JVC KW-ADV790. With a bit of playing with the eq settings I was able to get cleaner mids/highs, but noticeably less bass (even maxing out the lower frequencies on the eq). Sounds good, but it is not a vast improvement, and I'm not satisfied. I will be replacing the rest of the system after Christmas.

+1 on the lost of bass response. The bose amp just isn't compatible with any aftermarket receivers.

I would swap out the bose amp as well. Even a small , low power, aftermarket 4-channel amp would sound better with a new receiver, IMO.
