Proper Way to break-in Speakers?

Does it just happen naturally with use, or is there a proper method?

there's no real proper method. Just listen to it as you would normally unless that means full blast. After a couple days to a week (depending on how much you use them) they'll break-in.

I've heard that there is a break in period. It usually involves playing 'pink noise' through the speakers for a while before they ever leave the factory. Some manufacturers do this, some don't

You could hook up your pair of speakers to a home stereo and play pink noise through them for about a day. That would get the job done real quick.

Typically, it takes about 10-20 hours to fully break in a speaker. Some manufacturers, such as Morel, suggest 40 hours of playing time.

You know when you turn a TV on without the cable connected and you hear that static whoosh? That's called white noise. Pink noise is similar but sloped heavier in towards the lower octaves to produce equal what should be flat (equal energy) accross all octaves. If you've got a good system you want to see a flat response when playing pink noise on an RTA.

Re: Proper Way to break-in Speakers?

With home audio, it usually takes an average of 24 hours, moderate volume. Best to face the speakers close together and have them wired out of phase to reduce some of the irritating sound. Pink noise is great if you have a pink noise generator. If not, tune off-station on the radio. This is how I used to do it on home audiophile systems.

I'd follow the suggestion above if you're installing new speakers. Connect them to a home amp facing each other, out of phase, and let them run with pink noise or "off-station static" for a day.

If you crank the speakers too loud prior to proper break-in, they can sound harsh and non-musical forever! So don't make the mistake of "seeing what they can do!" by being impatient.

LOL! So much for breaking them in. I just finished preliminary wiring and wanted to test everything. Keep in mind this is 2:30am. God damn thing must have been set to full blast! Gave me a heart-attack. Stupid thing wouldn't turn off. Volume **** wasn't working either. Then I quickly yanked the key out of the ignition. Neighbors must have loved that!
