Amps Finally Installed

Here is a picture of my amps finally installed in my sedan. I needed to preserve the pass-through for skis. Also, for long trips, we put a cooler in the trunk so the kids can reach through the pass through for drinks. The 300/4 powers the door speakers, and the 300/2 is bridged, and powers the sub.

Re: Amps Finally Installed

Here's a picture of the sub. As I've found that I need pretty much the entire trunk for long trips with my family, the goal was to have a sub that I could remove, hence the Pro-Wedge. More than enough bass for my taste. When I travel with the family, I'm pretty much just using the front channels anyway, as the kids want to be able hear their in-flight movies and PS2 in their headphones.

Re: Amps Finally Installed

By the way, note the mdf panels behind the amps.....the front wall of the trunks is not solid, so these were necessary to have a place to bolt the amps up.

Over-all evaluation.....

This system sounds great. BUT, for low to medium volumes, just changing the door speaker to MB Quarts, and Dynomatting the doors, made an enourmous difference. The addition of the amps and sub made a marginal improvement above that. But as volume levels go up, the gap widens over using the Bose amp. At high volume, the system is now incredible, where with the stock amp, it was getting completely lost. Bottom line, my recommendation would be to do speakers and Dynomat the doors before considering amps if you're on a tight budget. If you never listen at high volumes, that might be enough for you. If you want clean sound all the way up to high volumes, this is a great set-up. If you like really huge bass, the 8W7 might not be enough, but it's a great small sub, (even if it is a big box....this thing is SOLID!!! Weighs like 60lbs)

Re: Amps Finally Installed

dang..so much room compare to the coupe...

nicely done and clean install too.

I use to be a JL audio sub guy, now after audition the focal utopia sub. I have to say, this sub contain very tight bass. I had JL Audio 10w6v2. I know it is not a fair comparison cause the price wise. The focal is about 1000 retail and JL about 400.

I wonder how the w7 hit compare to the w6. The w6 does produce more lower bass than the focal.

Again clean and nice installation.

Hey steven, when you have a chance you should hook up my adire koda 10 with xbl 2 tech, which is way cheaper then the focal sub and sounds just as good if not better.

Re: Amps Finally Installed

What did you power the stock "sub" with? Or did you eliminate it from the system?

Re: Amps Finally Installed

Re: Amps Finally Installed

Did you just mount the MDF amp boards to the back seat of the car using screws?

On the JL web site, there is a chart showing how much power each sub should have, and 250-300 watts is perfect for the 8W7. Remember, this is only an 8" sub. As it is, I have the gain turned down quite a bit and it sounds fine to me.

Even with the big sub box, I still have more room left than a coupe. When I go on a trip with the family, and need the whole trunk, the sub will come out in 15 seconds.

Screws with nylock bolts. The trick to mounting these panels, is that the front trunk panel is not solid; much of the surface is just the thin, flexible plastic panel. There are diagonal (metal) cross braces, and those are really the only place to mount anything. This is the whole reason for the MDF panels.

Sorry I'm kinda a newbie to this stuff... but how did you see where the metal braces were? A stud finder?

Thanks

To do this type of install, you need to remove the back seat. Once the upper portion of the back seat is out, the metal bracing is visible.
