Alpine Type R 12 or JL 10w6

LOL sorry its been a few years since ive been on a forum, but anyways im looking for bass i listen to rap a lot.. and yeah im trying to save space so i was looking at the zenclosure boxes and it looks like it really wouldnt make a big difference with a 10 or 12 with those boxes bc it fits right in the pocket.. i guess my real question is, is there a real big difference with the quality/sound/bass between a JL 10w6 and a 12" Alpine Type R.

Yes, there is a difference. And a lot depends on the enclosure itself. The Type R I think would be a better choice for you. It also has more cone area. The Type R is known to handle 1,000w easily, I'm talking continuous power, not that bullsh*t max power stuff. You could get more out of it if you used a larger enclosure.
However, if you're deciding to use the zenclosure, then if you could (because I'm lazy) state how much air space the 10" zenclosure and 12" zenclosure box has that would be helpful. Larger subs don't necessarily mean louder. I've had single 10's that get louder than a pair of 15's. It's all about providing the proper amount of power and the proper enclosure.
I would have offered you my new and oldschool 15w6 since it requires very little power and very little space (just as much as the subs you're looking at), but you wouldn't be able to fit it in a zenclosure because none are made for a 15" sub lol.
As for the sound quality, both the JL and the Alpine will sound good. Now if it were Kicker, well...it would be a more bassy.

thats what i was looking at, dammit!! you're taking my interest in the kickers! LOL, but i don't know im really leaning towards Alpine and JL bc it seems like those are the top 2 sub/amps but please correct me if im wrong. I've been doing all my research on JL's and Alpines to the point i don't even want to bother looking into Kickers. But 1000 watts for the Type R 12? interestinggggggggggg i dont want it to blow out.

I have 2 12" Alpine Type R's in my G right now in a custom built enclosure and I am very happy with the output. I have them powered by a Kenwood Excelon X1200M, they handle the power very well. The box I have is tighter than a Zen, my subs only have a little under 1.5 sq. ft. each, not counting the subs displacement (Type R's are beefy) in the box. I made up for that with more power and some polyfil. I think you will be fine with either choice, I went with the Alpine's and couldn't be happier. Hope that helps.

If you get a 1,000w amp I'd be careful with it. Sub's RMS is 500, but you can throw 750-800w at it and be fine.
A larger enclosure is going to give you a smoother response. A smaller enclosure gives you a tighter response and will be more punchy. That doesn't mean it's going to hit better though. I prefer a larger enclosure because of the smoother response curve. It's all personal preference.
As for my input on Kicker, what I meant was that it's more punchy of bass, it's distorted bass IMO...at least that is how it sounds to me. Sound quality isn't there. Hands down the Type R's will get louder than the new W6's, but again, that's all enclosure and power dependent.

I agree with you on the Kicker's they sound a bit too messy for me. I think im going to go with 2 10" Alpine Type R's, as for the enclosure what do you guys think about this?

Going with the two 10's you'll have slightly more cone area, so the ability to get a little louder. It's about 45 sq. in. of cone area difference. However, you will also need double the power so you'll need an amp that gives more power to one sub (single 12) or give power to both subs sufficiently. You won't be powering the 2 10's at optimum but with the single 12 you will be powering close to opimum, and that's the route I would go, single 12...unless you're willing to spend more money on an amp. The difference isn't too much though so I guess it won't make much of a difference, maybe a couple hundred watts, but that depends on the amp you would choose to go with for the single 12.

That would work fine, but i'd be careful when setting the gains. Great having headroom, but you don't wanna overdo it. Should be fine. There's a cerwin vega amp that puts out about 1200w rms that could go well with those 2 10's....thing is, i'm not sure how much each 10 and how much a single 12 would need for airspace. If you're pushing it on space with one and the other one has sufficient, I'd go with the one that's not pushing it with a smaller enclosure (that's just me though). with a smaller enclosure you will need more power. With a larger enclosure, you need less power.

yeah definitely going with just 1 12, 2 10's sound like a bitch to work with. btw i dont know if you checked out that website from zenclosure but here's the info on it, hopefully this should help...
