I got tired of my ghetto trunk setup for my Alpine TypeR and Audiobahn A100T. So after trying to get some inspiration looking at the custom setup threads, I started mine.

Cutting the template

I don't want to loose access to my spare, so this is the first stage of figuring out how big of a compartment I need to be able to still get to it

that box is the template of the amp inside a box with plexiglass on top. I wanted it to make it flush, but it's too bix, so this is what I came up with

There will be two compartments. This one will give full access to the spare, and will go up with two dampers on the sides. The space hole has already been made bigger to allow the tire to be removed easily.

Opposite to the sub wall, this wall will be made to create symmetry, but will be another compartment so that I don't have to use the trunk net all the time.

I kinda help to keep some of the costs down since my family is in the wood business. Here's our factory/my after 5pm install shop




Questions:

I am now trying to come up with the exact measurements for the sub box. I has to be 1cubic foot according to Alpines Specs. Does it matter if the back of the box is all weird asymmetrical walls? I won't be able to make a simple cube cause it's not enough space, so it will be a bunch of pieces of mdf glued together to make up the perfect amount of chamber space. (Ps. I don't wanna use fiberglass)

Should I use 3/4" or 1/2" MDF? Or any other kind of wood?

Do I have to dynamat the whole trunk? It's expensive and I haven't had rattling problems with this system since it's fairly conservative.

Do I have to stuff the sub box with cotton? I read that it helps with the sound quality.

Will be amp overheat inside the box? I plan on keeping the corner that meets with the floor open, so it will be able to suck the air underneath the mdf floor, I guess from around the spare tire. Will that be enough?

Last one...What do you guys think?? Anything I should make differently?

I don't think the crazy demensions of the back of the box will affect it that much. I have see others that have the Sub where yours is with no problems. As long as you get 1 cu.ft. you should be good.

Started to make the pieces out of 5/8" Ultralight MDF

The floor and sides are now done. Tomorrow is friday night so I won't even look at the pieces. Saturday I'll buy the carpet, plexiglass, and tackle getting the tire compartment cut and ready to go. And if I still feel like it, I'll start working on the sub box.

Friday Update:

 

First time I've jumped in this, and YES your amp needs airflow or it will overheat.

Call Audiobahn and see how much open space is required around it before you put it in its own little oven. You might be able to build a little shelf on the underside of the rear deck that has open space above, in front of and behind the amp.

 

^^ What he said about amp airflow. You could look at installing a fan if you can get the right voltage to it. I'm thinking 120mm PC case fan or something similar. Very quiet with good airflow.

Stuffing the sub box with polyfill will not only help with the irregular shape issue, but also allow you to build it slightly smaller than spec if space is a real concern. But I wouldn't go much smaller, maybe .85cf or so. And you should think about making it with 3/4" instead of 5/8". The thinner wood is fine for everything else, but beef up the sub box.

Not a bad layout. I wouldn't do it because of the hump. Why not mount it vertically either opposite the sub or just to the passenger side of the sub? Hard to tell in the pics if it will fit though.

To help with the air flow, I was thinking about keeping w.o that one wall that will be sunk into the floor. The PC fan is a great idea. Is one enough? Should I get a stronger one?
I tried opposide to the sub but I just looks ehhh. I wish it would fit flush, but it doenst... I also thought about raising the whole floor but I'd loose sooo much space.

Should I dynamat the wall that the sub box is going in?
I will change the size of the sub box wood. Gladly I havent done much towards that yet. Time to drive to the factory and get at it.

Can polyfill be substituted by cotton? I don't think they sell polyfill at walgreens lol

 

A 120mm fan should have pretty good airflow, 60-80 cfm, but someone else will have to chime in on whether that's enough. I wouldn't go any larger than 120mm since that's pretty much the largest standard size, so you'll have many to choose from (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...e=&srchInDesc= is a good source). I'd get a protective screen with it as well, not for filtering but to protect the blades.

I wouldn't. You can buy polyfill online. Cotton would settle over time and will absorb moisture and may even mold/rot over time.

 

walmart sells polyfil for like 2 dollars.

and it looks like you and me have a very simular project going on. only mine is so i can fit a stroller in my trunk. i just started mine today...

Anyways, mine is actually looking even more like yours, yesterday I was able to figure out how to mount it flush with some adaptations to the spare tire + double stacking sheets. It can still access the spare and the tools w. no problem.
