Put a single DIN device in upper glovebox

Put a single DIN device in upper glovebox
After 2 months and about 50 prototypes, I finally finished my design for a mounting bracket for the upper glovebox in non-NAV equipped G35's. It should accept any single DIN device 7" wide x 2" high x <7" deep and has ISO mounting holes on the side for mounting DIN standard devices.
It is a two piece design with an aluminum faceplace and a steel mounting bracket. It doesn't require any cutting to install and replaces the existing plastic glovebox. It will be available with 2 different types of face places. One will have a standard 2.11" x 7.2" opening cut in it for standard DIN devices, the other will have no opening at all and allow any size hole to be cut in it for mounting more exotic devices.
The DVD player I used for the prototype is a BOSS 2800T. It plays DVDs, MP3s, and has a TV tuner. Its slightly smaller then a standard DIN device, and is only 6" deep which is why I used it. I'm shoudl be trying out a more standard DIN device in it next weekend and I'll try and post pictures then.
The pictures only shows the prototype made from 26 guage sheet metal and aluminum. The final product will be machined out of 1.6 mm steal and brushed aluminum and have a more refined look.
I will post more and better pictures once I get them machined.
This is a complementary product to my G35 Screen housing that hopefully will be available by October. I have not updated my digitalwheelz.com domain yet, but I have a temporary website up at https://filebox.vt.edu/users/cholbroo/DigitalWheelzLLC/, however be aware purchasing is not enabled yet since I don't have the product finished. If your interested in this and would like to be updated or want pricing, send an email to godofcpu@vt.edu I just finished the design and will be sending it off to manufacturing later this week. It will probably be at least a month before there available for purchase.

Man I like. Can't wait until you get this going. I think I may be mor einterested in this than the CPU because of the ability to change disks easily and t.v. tuner option. Definitely interested in your screen and glovebox product. Thanks again for all your help.

wow that's pretty sweet. the first model ($399)..that includes the 7" screen and the housing to put in the cubby correct? then i guess all you would need is the glove box din converter and a dvd player for it to work.
time for me to get some money flowing in so i can get one of these..

Yup all the screen housing models on the site include a screen and the housing all you would need to add is the device(s) you connect it to i.e. DVD player / Rear view camera / NAV system / Playstation 2 / Carputer. If you want to put the device in the upper glovebox you would need to also get the DIN converter. (FYI, Playstation 2s will not fit in the upper glovebox).
I will be offering both the screen housing and the DIN converter for slightly cheaper when they first come out if you order within the first month after I start selling them. Send your e-mail address to godofcpu@vt.edu and I will keep you updated on the status and give you a coupon code to order with once I start taking orders.

Re: Put a single DIN device in upper glovebox
Stupid question, however, how would this work if you can't have a touchscreen? You need only a computer for that or would the Xenarc touchscreen also work with this DVD player/Nav player too?

Since the touchscreens will only work with computers, you will have to control the aftermarket NAV / DVD player through a remote control. The BOSS 2800T comes with a remote mount IR eye that can be mounted stealthly behing the red plastic with compass etc. You can probably also get an SWI-X to get your steering wheel controls to work with it too, but I have not tried this myself.
I will be offering a complete hardware and software solution for a carputer install sometime in early 2005 that will provide an interface closer to an aftermarket head unit then a PC desktop. i.e. touchscreen support and voice control. which will be my answer to putting in a touch based navigation system / dvd player / etc. Besides the fact that the screen housing design would be have to be changed, this is one of the primary reasons why I'm not trying to support touchscreens for aftermarket head units.
