Balanced vs. Unbalanced

I am using the stock Bose HU going into Rockford Fosgate line drivers. I then have a Soundstream Stealth amp (STL4.320) powering Infinity Kappas (2ohm) in the doors and rear deck.

The Fosgate line drivers have a switch to set the the output to Balanced or Unbalanced. What should I select? According to the directions if I set it in Unbalanced mode I should tune the drivers to 5v. If I use Balanced it says to set output to 2.5v.

I actually bought one of the rockford BLD your referring to and sold it when the MS-8 came out. I'm pretty sure you set it to unbalanced as it is the output setting. It accepts the balanced signal from the Bose unit and will then convert it to unbalanced.

Just checked the manual, set the switch to unbalanced. I doubt that Soundstream amp accepts balanced inputs.

IIRC, the balanced audio in our cars is the two signal wires + the chassis ground = three "prongs".

Most bose car audio systems use differential-balanced setups.

Yes the factory Bose is balanced-differential. It's a little different that a true balanced signal using something like an XLR type connector for proaudio use.

The Bose uses a "+" & "-" and then it also has a shield the length of the wire.

I've got an MS-8 installed in my '04 sedan using the factory low level signal sent to the Bose amp. I used Gepco 6180EZ which is a 2 conductor with a shield wire. Tap into those wires anywhere along the chain and solder in some Gepco and put some RCA plugs on the other end to plug into the Rockford BLD and put the switch in the Unbalanced position unless you have an amp that accepts balanced signals.
