Which steering wheel interface?
Which steering wheel interface?
Which steering wheel interface should I go with? I am getting the Pioneer 920BT in and 06 coupe w/premium... I'd like to still be able to use my phone and mute buttons for something if possible.
I spoke with friend who are installers and have gotten 2 different recommendations, the PAC-SWI and Metra Axxess ASWC.
Which one and why?
Thanks in advance Wrathernaut

Yep, I have no experience with other brands, and there's no significant price difference, so go with the one that has handy instructional videos and good record on here.
PAC SWI.
And yes, all the buttons can be mapped to whatever your headunit supports, which in the X920BT is basically everything, even the voice recognition.

Far from the best for a radio that supports a voice recognition button. I just looked through the ASWC installation manual, and it doesn't look like it can map a button to the voice recognition feature on the AVIC X920BT or Z110/Z120BT radios, so I definitely wouldn't use it with either of those radios.
For most others though, looks pretty good, since you don't have to solder in any resistors.
One other thing, the website it says to go to to see if the car will auto-program doesn't say if our car auto-programs or not, and it's manual programming looks to be slightly more complicated due to having to bypass the auto-programming search, but not substantially so.
They do claim it can be updated, though, so perhaps in the future it'll support the voice recognition button.

No Voice Recognition in the mappable functions: (and before anybody asks, no, it can't control the a/c functions towards the bottom of the list)
ASWC's mappable functions:
1. Volume Up
2. Volume Down
3. Seek Up/Next
4. Seek Down/Prev
5. Source/Mode
6. Mute
7. Preset Up
8. Preset Down
9. Power
10. Band
11. Play/Enter
12. PTT (Push To Talk)
13. On Hook
14. Off Hook
15. Fan Up
16. Fan Down
17. Temp Up
18. Temp Down
SWI-PS's Mappable Functions:
1. Volume Up
2. Volume Down
3. Mute
4. Track Up/ Seek Up
5. Track Down/ Seek Down
6. Source
7. Preset Up/ Disc Up
8. Preset Down/ Disc Down
9. Band
New functions added for Pioneer
10. Phone Status, Rev. 1.6.7
11. Answer Call, Rev. 1.6.7
12. End Call, Rev. 1.6.7
13. Voice Recognition, Rev. 1.6.8
So with a AVIC Z110BT, Z120BT, or X920BT, the SWI-PS is the one to get *right now*.
If the ASWC gets the voice recognition via an update later, it could be the one to recommend.

I think you are assuming that the phone functions of the ASWC (#s 12-14) wouldn't function to support voice recognition in a headunit. PTT in particular. Each head unit application may be different of course. The PAC unit has lots of complaints about delays in sending signals, which is why I decided against it.
I believe that 13 (answer) and 14 (disconnect) on the ASWC work fine, but you're right that I'm assuming that PTT means push to talk for push-to-talk enabled phones, instead of assuming it means "push to talk to the headunit to give it commands", but I think it's a solid assumption.
I've had no issues with lag on commands with the SWI-PS, but I've only used 1.6.7 or newer firmware in my installations and soldered all connections.
