What kind of features are you looking for in a head unit?

Why limit yourself to single-din? The Pioneer 3200BT is $330 right now:

I had the idea of installing 3 gauges above the single din radio. I rarely get phone calls, so I don't NEED Bluetooth. I have a GPS attached to my windshield, which is safer than looking down at the radio. I listen to XM only anyways, so I would need it to be built-in. Maybe with a CD player/ IPod compatible.

PS - I plan on replacing the speakers with Focals front and rear. A 10" sub will be put in the trunk on the driver's side. Power will come from 2 focal amps.

If you're going to be using nice speakers and amps like Focal makes, you should really provide them the best input signal you can. Personally I would rather run them off the stock head unit until I could afford the 99RS eggyhustles linked rather than get a cheap unit that doesn't give me the right control and want to upgrade it later.

Failing that, see if you can find a used top end model on eBay or the DIYMA forums marketplace rather than something less stellar but new.

BAM: You've got 5 hours to bid and win this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Pioneer-DEX-P9-CD-DEQ-P9-Processor-6-Disk-CD-Changer-/220706435550?pt=Car_Audio_In_Dash_Receivers&hash=item336320f1de
Same combo I used to compete with and have used for a helluva long time now. Sounds great (and no, not my ad, not selling my stuff lol)

If u go the p99 route, get raw drivers

It's a waste buying a component set when your hu has active crossovers

Can't go wrong with Alpine. I had a single din in my old car and it was great. I think it was ida-x001?

Looking at the ALPINE CDA-9887, only $330. What else do I need to keep my steering wheel controls, hookup to XM. Anything else I need besides the AC circuit board

To keep the steering wheel controls, the Metra Axxess ASWC should do the job.

Where to get one... (which also tells you what exactly it is, and provides pictures, and would have had you the answer a half hour earlier)
