Anyone want a in-car docking station????

My wife gave me an ipod for Christmas. The problem is there is not a good place to mount it. I was thinking about building some type of docking station that would replace the small panel next to the radio, the one that the driver side cig. lighter is mounted to. The cig. lighter would be removed. The panel would be covered in matching vinyl material. I would use small neo magnets under the vinyl material to hold the ipod in place. The docking station would wrap around the ipod, covering the chrome back. Since it would be a replacement panel, everything could be returned to stock. I just wanted to see if anyone would be interesed in buying one. If I get good interest I will take a moulde of my original and make copies. Do not ask me about price, I need to build one first.

Thanks, the box dude, 4080

I would too... I saw that site of the guy who put it in the covered boxed area infront of the arm rest. I have also read of people putting it in the spot where the Nav would go?!

Tim!

...buy the way, thanks for the email on the sub box...it's on my list!

A. What are you talking about?

B. Have you ever actually corrupted a harddrive using a magnet? In my experience its pretty hard to do so and I have tried alot. You need a pretty large magnet in very close proximity to do anything.

in a hard disk there is a recording surface that consists of a thin plastic layer filled with (very small, elongated) magnetic particles. this layer rests on an ultra-smooth aluminum disk. the magnetic layer passes very close to a stationary recording head that writes bits (0's and 1's) into the magnetic layer. the 1's and 0's are defined by their polarity. now if a magnet is placed near a hard drive, be it either strong enough, or for a long enough period of time the polarity can be reversed, hence corrupting the drive.

thats the science behind it. would i still like to see this implemented? yes. keep up the good work

Ok, I don't build hard drives, I build boxes. I will scratch the magnet idea. I knew you guys could shoot holes in my idea. I will find a way to mount the ipod that is acceptable to everyone. I will let my work speak for itself. I will keep everyone posted.

thanks for the commets, 4080

I am interested. I also got an Ipod for christmas! I am currently using the DLO fm transmitter and sound quality is not cuttin' it for me. I do have a suggestion:

For us non nav drivers, why not the cubby hole?? (see attached pix). I would like to keep the door to the cubby hole to close after taking out the I-pod. You might get some height issues with the Ipod and the door (when it is open), but maybe sit the dock a little lower than the attached pix?

You can probably use the docking station that the Ipod came with, but not sure how to go about powering the docking station. Maybe you can just use a the ciggarette lighter and just snake the wires in between the panels?

Hope this helps!

PS. I am a fan of your trunk sub box...sweet looking. I will contact you in the future when I decide to upgrade my audio system, thats if you are still making them.

bdtzmaru,
i have better pics of my install then the one you referenced to in your thread.
if you look at one of my other pics, you will notice that you can put the cover back on after removing the ipod.

P.S. please attach my name to the pic if you are going to use it as reference. thank you

I actually thought about hacking up something in my ashtray (since I don't smoke). That location just makes more sense since it can be accessed by driver or passenger. Still, I'd love to see what you come up with.

the magnet idea is definately to be avoided
however, i'm sure that with your skills, you'll find a way to mount the ipod securly in a very aesthetically pleasing fashion

needless to say, I am certainly interested

perhaps this might be something you guys are looking for. it's an all-in-one IPOD car charger/dock. you might be able to incorporate this on a mounting bracket (which is what i'm going to do in my saab) and mount it remotely along side your dash.
if you notice, the dock is much smaller then the one that comes with the IPOD, thus less space. it also has the line out for a hardwire connection to the HU.

buy.com has it for about $80, and for the price, you cant go wrong. plus your looking at a much cleaner and attractive install.
