Need help choosing 12" Sub for 4080 box
I recently ordered a 4080 box. I need help deciding on what sub to get. I was looking at the Rockford Fosgate P3 12" Sub.
Don't laugh people, but i currently have a Sony XM-D1000P5 Mono Amp running 2 kicker 10" L5's. At the time the Sub's were given to me from a friend and I really couldnt spend too much money on an Amp, so I bought the Sony. Suprisingly the amp pounds those subs hard. But I am worried that if I go with the Rockford Fosgate P3 12" sub that I will blow the sub cos the amp is rated at 900Watts at 2 ohms RMS. I think the RF Subs are rated at 500 watts RMS 1000 Max.
Will turning down the gain on the amp prevent me from blowing the sub? Anyone have any other recommendations?

Most people don't realize the gain control on the amp is there to match the input voltage from the head unit. So if you're getting 2volts at the amp then you need to adjust the gain to 2 volt. Really prevention of blowing subs comes down to keeping your amp from clipping, keeping the sub from distorting and also keeping the voice coil cool. Oh by the way I doubt you will be getting 900 watts continuous out of the sony amplifer.

I thought 4080 box for G35 coupe was fitted only for a 10" sub. Is it for G sedan. If for coupe, great to hear he now makes box to fit single 12". I've always like Boston Pro 12.5 subs, very clean tight bass, in ported or sealed enclosure. If you can find a single JL12w6, that may work also, smaller box if sealed, assuming your amp can handle 1.5ohm.

I second the Boston Pros 12.5. I'm actually gonna run 2 Bostons on my sedan.

My 10w6v2's In A Ported Custom Box Sound Like Any Top Shelf 12" Out There. But I Heard A Kicker 12" L7 And It Sounded As Deep As A 15"--i Swear! Also I Like The W7's - Any Size But Bigger Is Deftinately Better! You Really Should Consider Getting A Custom Ported Box- They Are Really As Important As The Speakers You Put In Em! Anybody Agree?
Hoo-man, bigger may be better for going real low, like down to 30-20 Hz. But the way a box is designed can also affect the ability to go low. Kicker L7's in large ported boxes can go deep and loud. But if we're talking about typical 10's and 12's I would have to go with the 10. The reason I would go with 10’s is because most companies use the same exact motor assembly for their 10’s and 12’s. So this means you have less mass to move (i.e., cone) with the same motor, which usually translates into accuracy.
Yeah i know the Sony is most likely not putting out it rated output, but its what I have and what I am going to use. I may upgrade the amp later when I get my tax return. But, currently the amp is kicking the shiet out of my 2 Kicker 10 L5's. But I want my trunk space back, so that is why I am going with the 4080 box and a single 12. Thanks you everyone for the input and the critique of my system. I know I have low end stuff in my stereo system, but I just want more bass then what the stock system with the ability to use 80-90 percent of my trunk. :-)
