I have been working on my system (see my sig for details) for a few months and have a good clear, clean, tight system IMO, but feel the weakest link at the moment is the mid bass "punch". I want to replace my rear deck 6x9 Clarion coax with Infinity series speakers to match the 6-1/2" Reference 6000cs series in the front doors (they sound awesome by the way). I looked around on Crutchfield and found the coax 6x9 Reference and Kappa series which would fit right in I'm sure........but I want a component speaker not a coax.....a woofer in the back (the highs are up front with me and I don't want to move the sound stage back). So I'm thinking of buying the same 6-1/2" Reference 6000cs series speakers, ditch the tweaters and install the woofers in the 6x9 holes......but of course they won't fit right in..........I searched the forum and did not find anyone who has posted this mod........can anyone out there point me to a thread or comment on the modification? I am thinking there is an adapter from 6x9 to 6-1/2" available?
Thanks!
Thanks!

cut piece of wood to cover the 6X9's opeing and then drill mounting hole and then cut out the wood to fit the 6 1/2....since you have sub in the trunk, so i dont think you will notice too much of that mid-bass from the rear.

Hi Shooter,
I went through the trouble of properly installing 6.5" mid bass drivers in the rear deck and it turned out to be a waste of time and money.
My motivation was similar to your, more mid-bass punch without moving the soundstage back.
I now believe kickpanels containing the tweeter & midrange and mid-bass in the doors will give me the results I desire.
I need to update my site to reflect the above.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info. limeg35....was wondering if there is enough room underneath the stock speaker grill to accept the extra thickness of the wood adapter........
blksnake.......good information......I attached a couple of shots of my install of the 6-1/2" Infinity 6000cs drivers in the door......are you considering something like this? Instead of using a flat mdf board, making a wedge shape to point the speaker more at the listener?

Yes, I considered an angled spacer, but in the end choose a flat type instead. Let me know if it works well for you.
You should really Dynamat the doors, especially around the speaker opening. It'll make a huge difference.

Blksnake......oh yeah it makes a difference....but I only used dynamat on the large panels like the outer skin of the door.....the mdf ring for the 6-1/2" driver is very stiff. I used spray foam in the small crevices (like the trunk and other places, be careful! use the non-expanding foam type or you can deform the metal!) and attic insulation in the large cavities (i.e. in between the outer skin and inner skin) and carpet underlayment behind each panel......I have NO rattles and reduced the sound level from 75 db to 68 db (I used a sound meter).......it took about 5 days of work to add all this sound deadening material, but it was worth it!
After looking at your system specs, we have very similar systems......what are you planning to do in the doors to add midbass punch?
