Radar Detector
Re: Radar Detector
well,
i'd have to say, maybe find a different place to put it in, or hide the wire under everything (that might be ahrd though) or see if you can add some kinda battery so there isnt wires
, wat radar are you using?

Re: Radar Detector
See...There are a couple of problems with the setup. I'm using the Passport Escort 8500. Its the most expensive of its class. I really like it and it saved me a bunch of times now...Anyway...the problem is that it has a shorter twisted wire (like on a phone) and the thing you plug into the cig. lighter has a smart button on it...AND the connector to the Radar Unit itself is like a phone plug.
Re: Radar Detector
Can you use a regular phone cord to replace the power cord like you can on the Valentine? If so, just use a straight phone cord or else you should be able to order a non-coiled cord from Passport.
I have my V-1 mounted just to the right of my rearview mirror and the straight poweer cord runs under the front head liner trim, down the right A-pillar trim, above the passenger foot well to the power plug (lighter socket). Another cord runs up and around the inside of the steering column to the remote display mounted by the Temp guage.
Result: only about 2" of power cord showing and the ability to remove/mount the RD in a few seconds!

Actually, I did something similar. I'm not sure if on the 8500 you can separate the remote display from the plug though.
The great thing about having the remote display by the main instruments is that it's almost in your line of sight and no one else outside the vehicle can see it (except standing directly beside you). Very easy to glance to figure out whether the radar is in front, beside, or behind you.
It makes for a very stealthy install and even from the front of the car, little of the main unit can be seen due to the tinted band on the windshield.

I have a Valentine, so I'm not sure how the display works on your 8500. Sorry, no digital camera.

Re: Radar Detector
As promised, here are the pics of the V1 install. It cost me 60 bux to get the installation done. As you can see, the V1 is mounted just to the right of the rearview mirror. The power cable runs under the headliner, down the passenger A-pillar, behind the glove box and then behind the stereo where it meets the direct power adapter. The remote display unit is mounted to the lid of the Nav cubby and the power wire runs down through the bottom of the cubby and connects to the direct power adapter. Now the V1 powers on whenever I start my car and the remote display unit hides away whenever I close the lid on the cubby.

Re: Radar Detector
I got it installed at this small stereo shop called Dinamic Sound on Wheels. They are in N.Miami and I've been doing business with them for a few years, ever since a friend of mine introduced me to the owners. Great people, 3 brothers actually. I haven't run into any problems yet but it still might be too soon to tell. The only problem I can think of is the suction cups coming loose for the V1 and the detector falling to the ground dragging the wire with it, but i'm not sure how likely that is. On a plus note, the V1 isn't too visible from behind the tint strip and the range is better since its higher up. BTW, I've heard of other people getting this kind of work done at the dealer but the dealer where I got the car, South Motors Infiniti, said they had no experience with this kind of work and that it might cost upwards of 150 bux, and that was just to wire it to a dome light, which would've been much easier and possible had it not been for the remote display unit in the cubby. If anyone's in South Florida and wants to get this mod done, I would be more than happy to give you the address of the stereo shop.
Re: Radar Detector
You will need a regular uncurled cord to run from the direct power adapter all the way to the radar detector. I believe that the Escort also uses regular telephone cables for the power so that shouldn't be a problem. The installers for my setup just used the uncoiled cable that came in the box with the V1. I am not sure if there is a remote display for the Escort but if not, the V1 front panel is still visible from the drivers seat. I just wanted the stealth of the remote display unit and this way a quick glance tells me everything. As for the cable from the direct power adapter to the remote display unit, they used the coiled cable and it looks clean this way. Hope this helps!!
