Installed replacement AC controller- dash display not working

2003 G35 Sedan

I had an audio shop start to install a second hand JDM double din dash kit today (like the one shown below) but when they plugged it in, although the AC controller worked it didnt appear to be connected to the LCD display (with the fan level and temp) in the center of the dash since it wouldn't light up at all.
They couldn't resolve the problem so I had them put the old one back in for now. The display came back on when the original gear was put back in.

The one I have looks just like this:

It is second hand from a guy on ebay who assured me it was fully functional. It's an earlier version of the JDM kits you can buy today.

It has all the wiring going in to a connector that fits the existing connector, and same number of wires going in. No obvious broken wires etc.

Has anyone encountered this before? I haven't been able to find a thread reporting this issue.

Thanks
DB

If you have an early 2003, and that's from anything other than an early 2003, it could be the cause. I know early 03's had different radios, and since the climate control and radio are bonded, it could be the problem.

Does your climate control display illuminate when neither climate control is plugged it? It should.

Thanks Wrathernaut
I'm away for a week and will check the cars date when I get back. The tech couldn't remember if the dash LCD lit up with nothing plugged in or not.

Wrathernaut- The car is dated Oct 2002, so yes it may have a different system. The shop didn't know if it illuminated with nothing plugged in.

It's hard to believe that that could be the problem but not read about it from anyone else complaining about the AC Dash display not lighting up. Surely there's got to be dozens of others that have tried JDM or metra kits in an early 2003 G35 out there....anyone??

If I had a service manual that covered the early '03s, I might be able to help more, but all the service manuals I have are for the "regular" '03s. It might be a simple as the power wire being in the wrong spot in the later '03s, or it may be that the 04's and such get power for that display elsewhere.
