2003 Nav Screen gray not working
My wife's 2003 G35 Coupe with 22m miles, had an F0 error in the CD portion of the radio. It was a jammed CD. Removed the CD's and the error went away. CD player works great. Now the Navigation screen is light gray with no image. When you push D/N the screen gets darker.
Also, I tried to eject the DVD disc, but it won''t eject. I can hear the disc spin inside the unit. After a few seconds the screen flashes dark and then back to light gray. No image. I've pushed the voice button and the voice comes thru the speakers. I purchase another DVD Unit
and it does the same thing. See attached pic and video. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My wife just wants her baby back to normal.
Thanks
I'm pretty sure the DVD drive itself died, if there's no manual eject on the drive (tiny hole you insert a paperclip into that pushes on the ejector to pop the disc out) then you can remove the screws from the outer housing and take the top off to get the disc out.
I've never encountered a drive that did NOT have the manual eject mechanism, it's always on the front plate of the drive somewhere but this is coming from a mostly PC application, automotive drives might not have the ejector, you will still be able to remove a few screws from the housing to take the top off to retrieve your disc though.
Reason I think it's the drive itself that failed is it won't go through it's power on test, that vibrating you are feeling/hearing is probably the gyroscopic angle sensor which is part of the drive, it determines angle changes in the vehicle as you drive and it does sound EXACTLY like a disc spinning in an optical drive. It's got a motor that makes it spin and a couple sensors to determine angle changes.
You can put the NAV system into a self-diagnostic mode, I would try that first since it doesn't require disassembly of anything.

There is no hole in the front of the unit. I took the top off the unit. I am not sure how to get the disc out since it is deep in the unit and there is no easy access to remove a disc.
Also, the display is only gray. To run the self-diagnostic mode you need to be able to read the screen.
There are no images on the screen only the light gray and dark gray for day / night.
Bought a second DVD unit. The same thing happened. No video on screen and the disc won't eject. Seems odd that this happens with two units.
Is there a reset for the nav computer?
I'm going to move this thread off to the AV forums, see if @Wrathernaut can provide any input because I don't know exactly how the DVD and display talk to one another. I thought all the brains were inside the DVD drive but it's possible there's some other controller along with the center console that has fried, typically there's this sort of setup on cars.
DVD - nav interface controller - display screen, and I though on the G35 that the DVD and interface controller were the same item, maybe I'm wrong though.
Do you hear anything like audible queues that the menu is working? Might just be a cable issue with the display?
Wrathernaut, he has replaced the screen as well as the DVD drive. Neither of the DVD drives will eject.
I would also check these fuses, Fuse Block - J/B is the cabin fuse box located in the driver/left footwell, IPDM is the engine bay fuse box located behind the battery.
@plasticfilm How did you remove the stuck CDs when you had the F0 error? My first thought here is that the harness for the display is not connected properly, or was damaged when/if the unit was removed.

Sorry for the late reply. I removed the CD's by opening up the top of the changer. Disconnected the ribbon cables and took the board out. That allowed me to
remove the cd's. I re-assembled the unit and the F0 error was gone and the CD changer works and plays.
When the Nav didn't work, I took the unit back out and checked all of the connectors to the units. Everything appears fine.
When it still didn't work I thought it was the DVD unit and bought another one. Installed it and have the same issues.
If a fuse was blown, would I still have the screen gray with the night feature working. Also, when trying to enter the diagnostic mode, the nav woman's voice came thru the speakers once. My wife really wants to keep her car as original as possible. She bought it new and only has 22,000 miles on it.
Is there any way to test the video for the nav or any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Tom

All the video and nav tests are laid out in the linked guide. I understand wanting to keep stuff original, but, the original nav was pretty poor when it was new. Now it's just a relic. Get something with Android Auto or CraPlay and you'll never look back. If you're after an original look, I recently put a Pioneer DMH-WC5700NEX unit in. The screen is modular and fits (after a little modification) in the factory nav location. If you mod JDM controls into the factory radio trim panel, you'd honestly never really know it wasn't factory.
I'm going to experiment on what I could do with a rewired USB keyboard with regards to having the factory buttons do some basic equivalent things - chiefly a rotary volume ****, because even the steering wheel controls feel wrong at times.
