05 DD Kit DIY
ok so i felt bad for not taking pics, as promised (sorry Ron!) when i first installed my new headunit, and I've been thinking about taking a shortcut on the install for a couple of weeks now... so today i decided to see if it will actually work, and it did! so here it is...........
if you check out docron's DIY for the 03-04 G35's you can see that you need to remove all the side underdash pieces. for the 05's you dont need to do this!
(i took these pics today. you can click on the thumbnails for enlargement!)
we first start on the lower brushed aluminum piece...

picture 1: although this pic is out or order, it will serve purpose here... lift up this long plastic center console piece, it will pop up about half an inch or so, loosening the lower aluminum piece...
push the center console piece back down. the aluminum piece will be loose.
Plan A: put the shifter in 4th, push your fingers down into the leather shifter boot at 5 and 7 o'clock, and curl your fingers under the surround and lightly pull up
if plan A doesnt work...
Plan B:stick a mini-crowbar in there (protect the aluminum with a piece of cloth!)
make sure to push the mini-crowbar in as much as you can so you dont chip the brushed aluminum piece on the edges, pop it up as shown...

picture 1: there are a total of 4 clips, 2 on each side...
picture 3: it might be easier to work with the ashtray removed. there are 4 screws, 2 on each side. remove them, unplug the ashtray light/ cig lighter harness and remove the ashtray...

note: these pics are out of order
picture 3: there is one screw holding the long side pieces, flanking the stereo and cubby, carefully remove the screw from each long piece, its located at the bottom near the center console...
picture 2: while lifting up the center console piece, lift up the side piece at the bottom so it pops up at the screw part...
picrute 1: then slide it towards the rear of the car, under the center console piece, the it should all pop out!

there are 5 screws holding in the bracket.
2 on the bottom (picture 1)
2 on the top sides (picture 2)
1 near the clock (picture 3)
picture 3: the clock area contains 2 pieces: the top piece and the bottom piece, they are connected at the middle by a simple male/ female connection that is easily disconnected...
the top part pulls out towards the rear of the car
the bottom part pulls up
picture 4: dont remove these screws just yet, do it when the whole unit is completely removed from your car (it holds the finisher to the bracket)
picture 5: a pic of the clock area removed...

completion!
this entire removal should take no longer than 30 minutes, compared to 1-2 hours for the 03-04's...
(the glove compartment is removed in this pic cause i stuffed the pac swi-x interface there and ran 2 sets of RCA and power wire to the trunk)

if youre gonna run RCA cables or power cables to the trunk you will still need to remove the right (passenger-side) underdash pieces, the removal is exactly the same as the 03-04's, see docron's DIY
also, for automatic cars, see docron's DIY for the removal of the shift ****

great KIA!!!! guilty huh....lol.....
wow....much easier to remove HVAC from dash in the 05's compared to the 03-04's!!! Infiniti must have listened to its service techs and redesigned the HVAC unit to be removed easier.....
Admins...can we sticky this?
Kia, contact Andrew (I think that's his name), one of the admins over at
g-owners.com to have him create a DIY guide for you over there.
congrats.....

few more things.....
also, include in your DIY guide some arrows and circle important screws/clips locations like you did except in *all* your pictures.
also, list the name of the parts, the part numbers and how much each part cost you had to get from J's. also the tools you needed.
also, list potential problems one might face in the 05 conversions like the AC blowing 70 degree air, scratching the aluminum (like you mentioned), etc, etc. list the fixes or tips to avoid these problems.
good job....
