Cool I can control my IPOD from my Steering Wheel! ... PICS

Alright guys, so yes I can control my Ipod through my steering wheel controls now! YAY!

Anyway, heres the story... I bought my 05 G35 Coupe at the end of May. In June, I bought my Pioneer AVIC-D1, and got the installation stuff from Yosi.

So I installed by DD deck. I love my GPS. It's great. I posted pics and a writeup a long while ago, (also installed my premium rearview mirror with homelink and posted pics and writeup).

So, at the time, I didn't do the steering wheel interface. I decided to wait on that for later. So the new Ipod (I bought the 30G color/video) finally came out. I ordered the black one. It's awesome! I also got my Pioneer Ipod interface.

So today I finally got time to go install it all. Fun fun.

I put in the PAC Audio SWI-PS. Many people do the SWI-X I believe which does the infrared remote. However, the Pioneer AVIC-D1 like many decks has a wired remote input, the PS is specific to Pioneer or Sony. So that's cool. I like hard wired.

I will tell you that the Steering wheel control interface is kind of a pain. You have to put some inline resistors in, wire it all up, program it. Whatever, it's not that bad, but not for beginners. The Ipod interface for my deck was simple, battery, ground, IPBUS connect and done. So it's all in. It works. I can now shuffle through songs using my steering wheel controls. IT FRIGGIN ROCKS MAN!

I ended up putting my Ipod and the Pioneer controller in the glove. In the first pic you see the Ipod on the heap of wires, and it says PIONEER on the screen.

Long story short... I can sift through the songs with my steering wheel buttons, adjust volume, blah blah blah. Pretty cool.

ENJOY!

Does the D1 display all the artist/title info on screen? I assume so...

Man, you're killing me. If I had the money I would absolutely do exactly what you've done to your G. I have an 05 with the stock stereo, and it's fine for now - at least it plays mp3s. I'd love to upgrade to a nav system and ipod, but you must have spent a ton of time and over 2K on all that, right?

ACtually a lot of people complain about the Pioneer Ipod interface, because of problems showing song title. It does scroll through the playlists and all that which is cool, but mine isn't showing the song titles, just song number. So I need to get out the manual and see if there is something I can do.

Regarding pricing, yeah it cost a little bit, but I planned on doing it from the start. I wanted GPS, but purposely didn't buy the premium package or GPS. Those two packages together are like $4200 from the dealer. Instead, I found my AVIC-D1 for $1100, my Ipod interface was $100, my install kit from Yosi was $400, and My PAC SWI-PS was $79 or something. I also got a premium rearview mirror online for $200.

So all in all, I created my own premium package with GPS for $1900 instead of $4200 from the dealer, and with better components. The only thing I really don't have is the auto on/off headlights. Oh well, I'll live.

Yeah, Im all about the do it yourself. But now that Im a working stiff, my hours spent putting in the aftermarket nav etc is just too expensive. Figure I get about $100/hr working, spending a day or two on the car would make up for the money spent getting the nav and premium pkg from the dealer.

Dope install though.

Thanks... Slimline PSII in the cubby coming soon!

The time I spend installing (not that long) is enjoyment for me!

No the AVIC-D1 has a trim piece that comes with it. The trim piece doesn't fit in the hole in the DD kit right, so you have to sand it down.

I just did the same setup with the AVIC-D1, Ipod interface, and PAC-SWI-PS. The interface for it kind of sucks. Doesn't show full titles, and pita to scroll through all my music. Using the playlists helps a bit, but I'm really hoping they'll improve on the interface. Other than that, I love it. No more crappy sounding Ipod cassette adapters or anything. Plus, it keeps my Ipod full of battery.

Very cool! I'm going the exact same route as you. Didn't get the premium or nav and planned on getting the D1. I'm about to purschase everything and have been going back and forth on the Ipod interface. Do you have any more pictures of how it looks on the D1's screen? I can't seem to find pictures anywhere of how it actually looks on the screen, what buttons come up to touch, etc. Thanks!

The one picture you see is what you get. There isn't much for options. I was kind of disappointed. But oh well. I'm hoping there will be a software upgrade for it someday or something. My next mod (since it wasn't known when I installed my deck) is to setup the D1 to play video while driving. It's quick and simple, but I need to decide on a DVD player or if I'll do the slimline PS2 first. I'll probably do the PS2 in the glove and move where I have the Ipod.
