High Output Alternators?
High Output Alternators?
I need to find an alternator that puts out 200amps and doesn't break my wallet completely. I am running a 2000w sub in my sedan, but will suffer from power dips if I dont get an upgraded alt.
Thanks for any info...

$650 for an alt? OMG! Just get an 8D size truck battery and put it in the trunk. Massive amps and LOW cost. Unless you want to play it for hours or are in competition, you don't need to spend all that money. I found a SEALED (SLA) size 8D 255 amp hr rating, 1100 CCA, God knows what the Short Circuit amps are (weighs 165#!) for less than $300. You start putting in HD stuff like that alt, you have to change many other things to handle it.

wouldn't you then have to install a battery isolator and worry about charging such a monster battery?

There's a couple of ways. Yes a battery isolator is one way (one this big would be very expensive) or you can use a "continuous" duty solenoid. It looks just like the one on your old 1959 Jeep, but it's rated for full on duty. Just rig it to "energize" when the key is on. When the key is off, it's remove from the system. Run you amp until it quits and still start your car!
One other advantage, rig up a manual bypass and if you run your starting battery down, just bypass and crank it up!
A lot of Amateur Radio operators that run 1000 to 1500 watt amps mobile, have used this for years.
Forgot to add: You can pick up a solenoid at most autoparts houses or at any auto/truck electrical shop. They don't cost much, you'll pay much more for the wiring.
