The term best is just way to subjective, although the absolute best sounding even to your personally ears can get quite costly. It is not an inexpensive task to reproduce sound in a car due to the fact that its simply just not meant to be.

I have spent the past 2 days visiting some of the best custom car audio spots in town here. All of them agree Focal and Boston Acoustics make the best car speakers in the under $500 (per pair) range. The Focal Polyglass 165v2 are good for the front on our Gs and they are under $300, the Focal Polyglass 165cv are good 6.5s for the back for around $200. They also make amazing speakers in the $1000/pair range but I don't have that kind of money for car stereo.

Anyway, FWIW this is what I have gathered from talking to these local fabricators.

Also, how much to Dynamat (or whatever your choice of manufacturer) the Doors and trunk?

Thanks

That's one of the problems talking to any shop - what they have is always the best.

We carry Dynaudio and DLS speakers. We don't carry Focal or Boston. I ahve worked with both in the past.

Stereophile magazine has called Dynaudio speakers the best car audio drivers they've heard.

IASCA seems to give more trophies to cars running DLS than Focal (check out dls.se and see their sound quality trophy list).

I personally really like Morel Elate and Integra drivers but you can't find a dealer in Portland (yet: )

I like a/d/s/ but their mids are hard to fit into many spaces.

Low-end Focals are NOT worth their reputation. The very high end Focals are pretty good IF you put them in kick panel pods. With a xover point of 4500, the tweeters don't elevate the vocals and horns the way the DLS, Dynaudio, Morel, and even the a/d/s/ and Alpine X-type speakers will.
