I would have thought that you just sprayed the rotor where needed and not the whole thing. So I'm assuming from your answer, that in the past, you have seen the whole thing sprayed?

Cool

No way would I just spray the entire contact surface....
I think that would ruin your pads.

So I assume that the rusting problem is mainly on the non-brembo models where the smaller contact area leave some rotor exposed????

Haha, now I'm getting conflicting answers. I think I'll go by what answer Gilley eventually responds with since he's already done this. I just wasn't sure if he had painted the entire surface or not.

Well...I can see where a small amount of paint on the edges would prob be no problem...

When brake pad manufacturers state: "Before installing new brake rotors (always install rotors in axle sets), be sure to thoroughly clean the rotors with clean wipes and brake cleaner. Make sure you completely remove any grease, surface residue, and debris that might contaminate or damage the brake pads."....

Scrubbing paint off on the main pad surfaces doesn't sound like a great idea.

1. Send you rotors back to me.
2. I will zinc coat the the whole rotors for free. (which is a $40 dollar value).
3. Pay for shipping back to you.
So we have only 2 options.
1. paint them with high temp paint.
2. have Sam zinc coat the whole rotors and pay for shipping.

i perfer not to paint anything, im usless with spray cans. i may have to go with option 2. but what will the result be if the whole rotor is zinc coated? since its over the black coating. also do i still have an option to return these?

I just painted and installed my R1 Premium rotors over the weekend.

You guys are making way too big a deal out of the painting of the rotor face. Within a few miles, the pads have already scraped away all of the paint n the face. All that is left is the paint in the holes, slots, and wherever the pad doesn't touch.

DO NOT OVER ANALYZE THESE THINGS!!!!

Sam,

The rear rotors that you sent me had some kind of coating on it that is preventing it from rusting like the front rotors. Was this the zinc coating? I remember PMing you about this previously. Whatever it is, it is holding up well against the same type of rust I'm getting on the front rotors.

I noticed that the rear rotor pad face was darker in color than the fronts, too.

Did you notice that they didn't rust like the fronts though? I'm wondering if there was a coating done on these suckas.

The coat you see on the rears is a phosphate coat that rubs off real fast. It is not a zinc that will help with rust, but a coat that helps bed in the pads quicker. We are in the process to do all of our rotors like this.

why don't your front rotors have the small 8mm service hole. On the stock rotors, that 8mm hole was perfect for "popping" the front rotors off.

Finally had time to install these and it went smoothly without too many hitches. The only problem I ran into was the 22 mm bolts that hold the front calipers in place are on there pretty good. It took me a good hour of unsuccessfully trying to remove them before figuring out that turning the wheels all the way out gave better access to these bolts allowing for more room for the breaker bar. The rears on the other hand aren't torqued as much so they were a little easier to break loose.

I matched these rotors up with some Project Mu pads and they have been working great so far. As for any rusting issues, I won't know until it rains I guess, I'll update when the time comes.
