What caused this???

So I was driving last night, going about 40mph on a nice road, unlike all the others in Chicago area. So anyway, I hear a loud POP/Burst noise and immediately pull over. The Tire pressure sensor starts beeping loudly, and I'm wondering WTF just happened. I look at my rear drivers side wheel, and theres just rim and the tire is like 10 ft from the car.

I get the tire, look for some damage / punctures, and nothing there. Go back to where I was driving to see if I drove over anything, and nothing there either. Went to Discount Tire Co. today and ordered a new winter tire. Should be here in about 2-3 days.

Here are the pics of the damage. Side skirt also got bent up a bit.

any ideas?

Ya, I showed those pictures to some people, and they are amazed that there wasn't damage done to the car. Car didn't swerve or anything. Thank you Nissan for making a safe car

Did you over fill your tires with air? Mabye there was a suddent temp change causing the air to expand? That sucks but atleast your not injured.

I would say it was just a bad tire and it blew do to more workmanship! That sucks though....take it back to discount and have them replace it!

From the looks of how it tore down the middle on both side pretty evenly i would say it was a manufacture defect. Fvcking walk in there and threaten to take them to court unless they provide you with free tires for life!

That's what happens to a LOW tire. You get a hot ring that forms around the sidewall and then BOOM!

Unless the TPS was fugged. That happened to me on another car. It ran low for quite a while and you could see the weak ring on both sides of the sidewall. It rubbed all the lettering off.

maybe camber wear.....may look ok from the outside, but the inner tread could've worn down to the steel belt. Did you notice any excessive road noise or wheel rumble?
