05 g35x brakes - are dealers suppose to treat as 03-04 pads/rotors? tsb? proof? help

(originally posted in sedan forum - though maybe better suited here)

My 05 X has only 20,500 miles on it. A little while ago the VDC and Brake lights came on the dash and shortly after that I heard/felt terrible grinding from the driver front brake. It clearly needs replaced and I'm fully capable as I've done numerous brake jobs over the years.

HOWEVER, I've never had brake pads wear out in under 20K miles. Nor have I ever had pads that didn't have a wear indicator tab on them to let me know it was getting close.

I've seen here and there that the 05 X has the same brakes as the 03-04 sedans and those brakes were considered "bad" by Nissan.

So this morning I took my car to the dealer to have them check it out thinking it would be covered by warranty. They haven't looked yet but the desk guy said it was likely normal wear/tear not covered by warranty. Further it was going to cost $60 just to "inspect" the brakes.

I told him I'd heard about the 05 X having the same brakes as the 03-04 and he disagreed and said they were new.

Anyhoo.. I haven't got the call yet but I'm anticipating this stealership to tell me it isn't covered by warranty.

Anybody with experience in this? Is there documented proof of the 05X having the same brakes as the 03-04 sedans? Is there a TSB or recall for this?

Have any of you had pads wear out in under 20K miles??????

Thanks in advance.

I never had any problems with my 05X brakes, they still had quite a bit of wear left when I got rid of it with 30,000 miles on it. The only problem I had was the dusting problem once in a while.
Did you service them once per year? I believe this helps and is also reccommended.
I never heard of any recall for those brakes

By "service" if you mean visual inspection then yes. But I've never had pads wear out so quickly even on my 300zx turbo and twin turbos. Those cars were driven aggressively. The g35x is my family car driven pretty normal. It just seems crazy that 20,000 miles and the pads go (and go quickly with little if no warning).

Just confused, frustrated here. I thought I had heard of probs with the earlier models and that the 05 X had the same brakes as those earlier models.

Thanks.

By service I mean clean them up, lube the pins and slides to prevent sticking calipers and premature brake wear. I did this on my last two Maximas and G35s, I think it prevents a lot of unwanted problems. If you check with the Dealer or manual, you will find they also reccommend this.
The only problem I heard on the 05X was the dusting problem.

Well, the dealer got back with a quote of $1400 for new rotors and pads all the way around. That is just plain comical.

Without any documented insight if the 05 X is to be treated like the 03-04 sedan then I couldn't really say anything other then "no thanks, I'll take care of it for less then $200".

I dunno guys... I'm no mechanic but I've always done the maintenance on my cars for the last 17 years (suspension, exhaust, timing belts/chains, brakes, etc). Plenty of brake jobs on cars I've driven much more aggresively. Never seen a pad wear out in under 20,000 miles. Never seen a pad not have some type of wear indicator thus trashing my rotors.

I know all dealerships are the same and Nissan/Ininiti will still be my brand of choice, but today I lost a little respect for Nissan.

Thanks to those who chimed in.

Heck, that sucks. You would think they would suck up some of that cost.

they have a book of consumer complaints/affairs about all kinds of owners of different G's that have frequent brake problems, it just like the problem with 2000-2003 maxima's headlights getting robbed, the company just doesnt give a crap because the car's still sell

Your brake wear out at around 20,000 miles is normal for the 05X I think. I test drove an 05X before I buy my 06X and I didn't like the 05 X brake at all. It bite too hard and because of this it might also wear out faster.
My 06X have upgrade brake same size with the rear wheel drive sedan. Bigger rotors and have 2 piston calipers in the front.
