Whine when cold on 04 6MT Coupe
To follow up on my attempt at figuring out what was wrong with the tranmission:
Is it possible to track the diagnosis of faulty transmission assembly through Infiniti warranty? No. The transmissions are sent to a test facility to verify condition. From there they are sent to be remanufactured. There is no system for reporting back.
Are all the 6MT replacement transmissions new? No. Warranty procedure involves replacement with a remanufactured unit. However, it takes time to for remanufactures inventor to become available. In the event there are no remanufactured unites available, a new unit is provided.
Note, we just had another customer come in with notch shift. We drained Amsoil and refilled with Nissan MTF and the condition is remedied. Too early to make conclusions but at this point I would recommend using Nissan MTF to minimize chances of notch shift.

I spoke with Amsoil just now, and they pointed out that if you have having notchy shifting with their fluid, that you could've potentially ordered the wrong fluid. To clear things up, this is the correct fluid for the manual transmission:

Hey guys,
I thought about it and I want to clear something up:
My recent posts might give the impression a unique process has been established for specifically for the 6MT which is misleading because the warranty process is the same for the 6MT transmission as other transmissions.
Additionally, after discussing with several individuals, I have determined that no manufacturer within the last 13 years has provided diagnostic feedback on transmission, alternators, engines, audio heads or any other component that is sent back for testing/remanufacturing.

Well I have noticed a few things with my transmission couple weeks post-swap.
The original noise is gone but thats to be expected as the temp is way up from what it was. That being said there was a few cold days and it still didn't make the sound, but a week ago we had a blistery night and I tried to replicate the noise and sure enough the whistling was back. It was to a lesser degree and there was no whine, but for 5 or so minutes the whistle was apparent. I wonder if it will come back fully again next winter?
I also noted a slight whistle now at @ 18-20mph in second usually. It is very faint but there nonetheless at all temps and when the car is warm. You really have to pay attention to it, but I don't think it was there before. I will keep an eye on it, until I can replicate it perfectly and have it isolated I see no point in taking it in. I'm gonna take it to a parking lot late tonight next to some buildings to see if I can isolate exactly what and where it is coming from.
Will keep you updated, I should be able to run to the dealer some time this week or next weekend with new results.

Just some ideas and commentary:
Cold air inlet damper is on the Differential Pumpkin unit itself. On the rear top back right corner. Its not screwed in...its pressed in.
I just had my 3.5FD pumpkin installed tonight and afterward, my G howls/whines like everyone here has said. My sound is in the 35MPH-65MPH range. I recorded a clip on my iPhone while driving home. I'll have it up by the morning
During the install, I was shown where this part is. Looks like a metal wick on a candle and its pressed in pretty tight but can be adjusted manually.
Perhaps its out of position or something? I wish I took pics when I had the pumpkin on the floor before it was installed. MAybe some one has a spare pumpkin laying around.
We used the old Cold Air Inlet from my stock 3.3FD pumpkin on this one when it was installed.
I'm willing to bet this is the culprit. I may have to go under to check for myself. Hopefully I can make the sound go away.

I just got back. This morning we, added more fluids and took the car out for a spin.
The sound is still there. Its not as loud as before but you can definitely still hear it. Its a whirling sound coming from under the back seat as I coast and decelerate from 65-35MPH or so.
On the highway, it makes the whirl sound while I accelerate I'd say anything over 60MPH and the sound's gone around 70-75 on up. Fastest I took the car to was about 85MPH. (Temp for today avg...50 degrees)
Our solution:
1. Since the VLSD 3.5FD diff sat for a while not unused (a few months), I'm going to drive the car about a week and see if the fluids can move through the entire differential and hopefully correct the noise for good.
2. If that doesn't work, We'll swap back to my stock 3.3FD diff and call it a day for now. Dang why couldn't this 3.5FD unit be silent and normal like my stock 3.3FD diff? The car's so much nimbler with it on

Nothing's wrong with the motor of your car. The sound is coming from the diff. I'm not 100% sure I know why though. Any experts want to chime in?
Nawh we checked and it was on correctly. That didn't change the sound.
The difference between the 3.3 and 3.5 Diff is the change of the gear ratios.
Do a search on here and my350z and you'll find tons of good info based on the diff. ratios etc.

I don't think it has been conclusively determined the sound described this thread is in the differential.
