Good stuff.

Did you have any other symptoms the trans was bad before replacement?

Okay, your post only referenced the CAI so that's the reason for my response. Trying to keep this thread on topic as people have lots of different noises. We're speaking about the noise when driving the car if that's what and when you're hearing it.

Re power loss, I'm responding with my recollection of the people who have dynoed their cars before and after and posted results on here. CAI manufacturers likely have other claims.

No, there were no other symptoms. At 70k it was shifting as smooth as butter, no grinds, nothing unusual. I switched it to Amsoil at about 4k to get the break-in metals out w/ the factory oil and I've been switching it 30k intervals. The tech said I just got a bad trans in the sense that the way it wore it hit some kind of harmonic; nothing to do with the oil.

also, they said my clutch was at ~60% so they didn't bother replacing it.

Hitting a harmonic at cold temperatures? We need to know more about the output shaft seal!

I think they still have my transmission at the shop. I will ask them to check it out.

Yes, please contact the dealership! Ask what exactly was wrong with the transmission, since there are many parts to it.

Thanks!

I talked to the dealership today and they said they cannot disassemble the transmissions there. The transmissions get sent back to the manufacturer for whatever. I asked about the output shaft seal, and was told that there was nothing leaking from the transmission, and that all appeared ok - the noise was purely internal.

It is still a mystery if my transmission is a rebuilt one or a new one, so they are contacting Infiniti today to determine if transmissions that they send out are remanufactured or new. The manager of the dealership also said he would attempt to track the transmission throughout its life to disassembly to determine what is actually wrong with it, but that is something that is normally not supported and it is unclear if his attempt will be successful.

I will keep you guys updated if I get any more information.

Cool, thanks for the information. Let them know that hundreds of other Gs and Zs have this noise and that they SHOULD disassemble it to figure out what the problem is.

+1. although until we start actually waging a public campaign against this there's very little impetus on their part.

what's the first step in waging a public campaign against this?

Thanks for the report bythabay. If it's not too much trouble can you recap your problem ie

miles on car
when it started & how long
describe sound and pattern of issue

I ask this because from your earlier post I'm not sure if it's the same issue I'm having. My noise starts at a much lower speed like 10-15mph and is pretty constant. It a cross between a mechanical howl/whine and wind roaring or rushing in the window. There is a very slight change of pitch sometimes which doesn't seem related to speed, gear or drive train load. My sound goes away after the car warms up -say 5 miles or 5-10 minutes. The noise won't happen unless outside temps are below 50F roughly and the car has been sitting at least 12-18 hours. It's very loud and even more so with colder temps. I am running a synthetic fluid that was put in about 8k miles and I now have 25k miles.

Thanks

Maxus, I don't know the answer to that however a similar action was made against Nissan for the tire feathering problem on the 350Z.

Same exact issue here.
-Noticed at about 85,000 miles (The first winter I had my G)
-Wind leak, hitch pitched whine noise unless it's 45*+ and sunny
-Continues for a little while on the highway, stops within 5 to 10 minutes
-Always from front, right side of the cabin
-Front passengers have said it's coming from the rear of the car

Anything else?

In the morning, after my G has been sitting overnight in the cold, I have a hard time pushing the shifter into 1st until the transmission warms up a little. I usually pump the clutch and try to ease the shifter into 1st. Sometimes I will be at a stop sign near my house for like 30 seconds pumping the clutch and easing it in. I usually don't use 2nd gear until the car is fully warmed up because it will grind a little if I'm not easy with it. Gears 3,4,5,6 have no other problems when cold. I find it easiest to shift from 1st to 3rd when cold.

~70k miles on the G
start happening at around 65k and usually lasts about 1 minute or less if I am driving at highway speeds
The sound is a mild tone that would start phasing in and out after a while. Eventually the sound would go away completely.
