I cannot say that it was the diff because after the dealership swapped out the tranny the noise has been gone. Even on the cold days there would be no noise. They never figured out what it was they just swapped it out

Anybody know if this same issue is plaguing the 2nd gen G coupe (G37) 6MT? I just wonder for a couple of reasons. If it isn't, I may ask the dealer if they can replace the transmission with that version. If it is an ongoing theme, I am a little cold to the concept of buying the G37. In other news, I escalated the transmission issue to Infiniti consumer affairs, but have gotten no further in doing so. I think it is a bug Nissan has not pin pointed with these cars and they do not want to admit it. The whole time consumer affairs had my case (approx 6 weeks) the car sat at the dealer. When I finally got tired of calling and stalking consumer affairs trying to get them to do something about the problem, I picked the car up. What happened next was about enough to make me want to drive the car off a cliff and watch it explode at the bottom of a revine. I parked the car on an incline of what I would guess was about 10 degrees with the e brake on. After exiting the vehicle, I heard a "pop" and the car began rolling backwards. I realize I can leave the car in gear, but I have been parking manual cars with only the e brake for about 20 years and never had this problem. Needless to say, my rear bumper requires $500 of work to fix the damage. It's just a good thing my car only rolled back about 8 feet before it struck an object and I'm fortunate that object wasn't a living thing. I told consumer affairs about that as well, but they remain silent. What good is consumer affairs if they can't make good on a bad situation? I am over it. Those folks are useless to me. Dissapointing and is an understatement when describing my ownership experience. Maybe I should buy a Pinto. I don't think those have any major defects.

I had the transmission whining noise at cold temperature also back in January 08 when I lived in So Cal.

The noise began a couple of days after I had my oil, coolant, diff fluid, and manual transmission fluid changed at a shop called Oil Stop in Costa Mesa early Jan 08 (the car had 79k miles at the time).

A day or two after I had the work done on my coupe, i started to get the same noise that i see many of you on this thread are having. It was a whistling/whining/howling type noise that only would happen in the morning when the car was cold and when it was cold outside. Once the car warmed up a bit, the noise was gone. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with the way the car was driving, just that annoying noise.

Anyway, i looked at the list of fluids that Oil Stop put in my car, and noticed that they put a 80/90 gl4/gl5 (some kind of multipurpose oil i guess?) manual transmission fluid in my tranny. Those weights didn't match infinity's recommended fluid of 75/90 gl4.

To go into a bit of detail, I finally brought my car back in early March 08 to Oil Stop with some 75/90 gl4 Motul manual transmission fluid I picked up at Autobachs and had them swap the MTF at their cost due to their negligence in putting the wrong fluid in. Motul has a couple options including the gl4/gl5 approved oil, however, i made sure i chose the one that showed ONLY gl4 rated. I didn't want to have anything to do with gl5 in my tranny.

I've never had the whining noise since and that was 20k miles ago! I really think that anyone with this problem might want to try having their transmission fluid changed.. maybe even use the exact MTF that i used. Its worth a try. Just my 2 cents.

I had whining problem when cold(like winter cold) for looong time now. Driveshaft was replaced and I have Amsoil gear oil in-still whines(but goes away after heating up). Nothing failed in 4 years of ownership, and shifts are very smooth.
I find that my time is too expensive to haggle with Infiniti, especially since car is off warranty.

I'm up for trying the Motul. If that solves it, it would be awesome.

Good luck with the Motul. I hope it works. I'm convinced that the whine/whoosh/whistling sound is a direct result of improper fluids in the tranny for many people having this issue. It was the reason for mine.

I have an 06 G35 6MT with 52K miles. I purchased the vehicle used and with 32K from out of state and it came from a warmer climate which explains why there was no previous history in the dealer's computer network historical data. In cold weather, below freezing, it exhibits the same howling/whining noise everyone is talking about. It goes away after you drive the vehicle for about 5-7 minutes. It does not make a difference if the clutch is engaged or not, you will hear it from around 30 mph and higher. Once the car has been driven for the short period the noise goes away and stays away until the car is cold soaked again, overnight for the most part. Took it to the dealer twice, first they could not hear it (hmmmmm...) then I was able to drive the veichle with a tech on board and they confirmed that I was not loosing my mind. They spoke to Infiniti and I followed up with Infiniti consumer affairs myself and their response was that this is normal for this vehicle. I have a technical background and currently manage a shop of 50 aircraft mechanics, I have driven manual transmissions for years and this noise does not sound normal to me. What concerns me even more is that they cannot tell me where the noise is coming from. I mentioned to them that it was suggested to go to a lighter weight fluid in the differential and their response was that Infiniti did not recommend it. There is a lot of speculations but if this is a fluid/lubrication related issue that is noticeable during cold temperatures. My question: Is this condition ultimately causing unnecessary internal wear that may lead to a future mechanical failure most likely when the powertrain is out of warranty? Not to mention putting up with the annoyance of the noise every time you start driving the vehicle in the winter months. Moral of the story.....I got no assistance or relief from neither the dealer or Infiniti. I will try again next winter and maybe use a different service department and hope for the best.
I had heard about a transmission upgrade while the powertrain is still under warranty but I cannot confirm that it truly is available and no recalls have been issued to my knowledge. Any other ideas????

whine/humming driving during warm up is the transmission. I had mine replaced under warranty 2 years ago.

the problem is readily apparent to me....at very cold temps your trans oil turns to molasses. for the first few minutes because the oil is so thick there is obviously a moving gear that is not getting lubricated until the oil warms up and thins out. in addition Feb 26. I have rebuilt more than a few manual trans. although I have not taken a 6 speed apart as yet the symptoms are ALWays the same....everyone I haVE seen has a reverse idler gear situated high up in the trans, it does not get lubricated on a cold start. it operates o;n the SPLASH system...so people are complaining of noise until the car has been driven for awhile. I changed my oil out on maintenence at 46000 miles although I did not have any problems with it before hand....I used amsoil which apprently was TOO SLIPPERY causing the trans to crunch gears by beating the synchromesh. I changed to Mobil 1 and problem was solved. Now last it is possible that many people have changed their oil after experiencing howl but too late as they may have worn the shaft that reverse idler rides on.
