Nope, that doesn't cut it. I've driven personally in almost a dozen G35 manuals in all weather, and mine is the only one I've heard of with this noise. Regardless, cars do not "howl" in 30 degree weather. I've driven in dozens and dozens of manual-trans cars over my driving career in winter, and none of them had this type of noise! Even my old Sentra in a -40 degree day didn't howl. It didn't shift worth a damn, but it didn't howl.

The "you have a performance car" answer is what the dealer says when they don't want a warranty claim. There are things that seem to help, and other things that fix it, but there's still something at least 'cosmetically' wrong with that noise.

Still love my G, though.

k guys,

update on my tranny and diff fluid flush...

So as I said i had them flushed last week and the weather got colder to about 1 or 2 Celsius and I heard the "windy" noise again. However the noise was A LOT softer and wasn't as annoying! It did not remove the noise but it did help quieten the noise. All in all it's something to do with tranny for sure but the cause is still uncertain. This is really too bad we can't figure out.

Good hunting folks!

I noticed the same problem too. I have an 05 6MT Coupe, didn't notice the noise until after I switched to 75W-90 Royal Purple in the transmission (although I noticed it for the first time when I drove up to NorCal after the fluid change, I have only noticed it in SoCal once, and it was after the fluid change). It may have been there before the change and I never noticed it or the climate just wasn't quite cold enough.

With that said, it sucks to see we have no definite solution yet. I will be changing out rear differential and transmission fluids with others to try and diagnose, but it looks like my time is running out since we're into the warmer months now. I'll keep you updated if anything changes though.

EDIT: my noise sounds like my windows are not rolled up all the way. In fact, when I first heard the noise the first thing I did was try to roll up my windows only to realize they were already up. Definitely sounds like air coming through the cabin.

Hey Bauer418,

Ya that is the noise we are all getting in this thread. The windy noise, howling, whining,.... etc.

That was my first reaction to the noise as well (to open and close all windows a few times).

As I mentioned in my previous post, after switching to MOTUL transmission oil the noise has gone a lot softer. I was able to test it on a cold day in March.

The noise definitely temperature related and I believe we have established that fact.

I feel like most of us have already given up and just deal with it on seasonal basis. If you haven't already done so, read up on all the posts. Although it may be a bit long It was very helpful in determining what the cause might be. I've then decided to get my transmission and differential fluid changed.

Good luck! and if you find any leads please share with us!

Kevin

I did go ahead and read through the thread. I was curious if anyone else had received the 009 transmission and verified that it solved the problem. I know many others had transmission replacements to no avail but I did read the post that the newest transmission revision supposedly solved this issue?

Anyone ever find a solution to this? Its getting colder here and my sound is getting louder. There has to be a cure for this! My car is out of warranty so I cant get a new transmission. It is so annoying!

Well, i just had my clutch assembly changed too.

I still heard the noise a few times. Not too bad. But the temp hasn't dipped too low so far. But, I'm pretty sure the noise will come back.

I wonder if the "Nissan's" do it too. Were supposed to have the "Premium" version of Nissans. The only difference seems to be the mandatory leather seats and electronics......

Do you guys have to bleed your cluth fluid often? I have to do it every 6 months, or it gets so dirty and starts sticking.... Whats strange, is that it doesn't leak.....just gets "used" fast.

That is really strange. Are you using the proper type of clutch fluid? it should be DOT3. Perhaps you are not bleeding the fluid properly? I'm just thinking out loud..lol

I tried DOT3 and DOT4. Presently I have DOT4 because of last summer. And yes, it was bled properly. All the fluid was crystal clean when I did it with my cousin who is a mechanic.

This morning it was warmer than usual for this time of year. No whine!

Ok, I'm having the same problem as everyone else with this whinny noise until the vehicle warms up. This is the first winter I had this and it didn't start till recently; I had this car for 5 years and it only has 34k on it.

Here is the history of my tranny:
I burnt my clutch out a few years back and had it replace with a stillen clutch (ACT) and lightweight flywheel.

Everything was fine and dandy until I took it to Jiffy lube and had the transmission fluids replaced, radiator fluids replaced, and a oil change. They did not do the differencial as I recall.

Now my car make a wierd noise when I start to drive for the first time in the day. It makes a horny moaning whiny sound or something like that for about a 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile. The distance is never the same. Sounds louder if I roll down the windows. Then completely disapears down the road. My tranny is still shifting smooth and working better than the factory installed clutch and flywheel but this noise it annoying.

This car is almost out the door (i'm done with the G even though its been faithful except with for the crappy factory clutch which smelled like burnt popcorn all the time), but I don't want to trade it with that noise. I see a 2011 WRX STI Hacthy in my horizon.

Just adding my 2 cent to see if it helps toward a definite solution. I will be going to JiffyLube to find out what type of fluid they used.

I have the same issue. to me it seems to come from my front passenger speaker. someone suggested to me that it could be a loose ground wire. but once the car warms up, sound goes away...

The noise began a couple of days after I had my oil, coolant, diff fluid, and manual transmission fluid changed at a shop called Oil Stop in Costa Mesa early Jan 08 (the car had 79k miles at the time).

A day or two after I had the work done on my coupe, i started to get the same noise that i see many of you on this thread are having. It was a whistling/whining/howling type noise that only would happen in the morning when the car was cold and when it was cold outside. Once the car warmed up a bit, the noise was gone. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with the way the car was driving, just that annoying noise.

Anyway, i looked at the list of fluids that Oil Stop put in my car, and noticed that they put a 80/90 gl4/gl5 (some kind of multipurpose oil i guess?) manual transmission fluid in my tranny. Those weights didn't match infinity's recommended fluid of 75/90 gl4.

To go into a bit of detail, I finally brought my car back in early March 08 to Oil Stop with some 75/90 gl4 Motul manual transmission fluid I picked up at Autobachs and had them swap the MTF at their cost due to their negligence in putting the wrong fluid in. Motul has a couple options including the gl4/gl5 approved oil, however, i made sure i chose the one that showed ONLY gl4 rated. I didn't want to have anything to do with gl5 in my tranny.

I've never had the whining noise since and that was 20k miles ago! I really think that anyone with this problem might want to try having their transmission fluid changed.. maybe even use the exact MTF that i used. Its worth a try. Just my 2 cents.

Since making the switch to Motul at 79k miles (in 2008), I haven't had the Whistling/whining/howling noises in my transmission.

At 105k in 2009, I did another Motul manual transmission fluid change (Motul 300 75w 90) and I'm currently at 118k miles without any signs of the Whistling/whining/howling noises.
