Looking at your pic, it looks like the nut went way pass the cotter pin location. Did yours fall or break off?

nah that pic is a honda- i was just simply showing honda's example of preventing the axle nut from backing out as opposed to nissan's. (notice the nut has a dent, preventing the nut from back out)

This is what the nissan one looks like.
