lemme guess. wheel bearing is shot?

the wheel is on tight at 80lbs of tq yet the wheel can move back and forth. It doesn't move side to side though.. crappy nissan wheel bearing?

EDIT: problem solved. read below.

here's a video:

Holy crap that's a lot of play...but yes, I would say it's the wheel bearing.

yes. if you can verify the 32 mm axle (?) nut is on tight, than a failed rear wheel bearing would explain the play.

if the nut is not on tighten, than tightening should remove that play. BUT...there is a reason the nut moved in the first place. eventually the wheel bearing will need to be replaced.

I don't think it's suppose to move regardless. The nut doesn't hold the bearing in place does it ( I've never removed the rear one so I don't know )?

thank vinh for the info!

I had no symptoms while driving. I just happened to be changing my wheels back to stock and notice there was significant play. ugh. more wasted money on parts that shouldn't break this early.

ppl with 45k+ miles should check their wheel bearings.

I think your aftermarket wheels could have assisted in bearing failure.

I found out the axel nut is loose. It was so loose i was able to loosen it by hand with no tools. so whoever has the axel clicking noise should not ignore it.

Interesting...I'll have to check that. I just don't see why it would move because of that. The front one has no axle and it doesn't move. Hmmmm...

aparently honda engineers are smarter than nissan engineers.

s2k's also have a click issue also but they resolve by staking the nut preventing it from being loose

look at the pic below. the nut is dented in.

Axle Pops or Creaks:
'00–02 S2000
On '00–02 S2000s, if your customer complains of hearing a single pop or creak from the rear of the vehicle when changing direction from forward to backward and vice versa, the problem may be axle (driveshaft) movement in the rear hub. To eliminate the noise, replace the spindle nut on the affected axle. Apply grease to the surface of the new spindle nut where it contacts the hub. Torque the new nut to 298 N·m (220 lb-ft), and stake the nut.

so with our crappy nissans, it's going to happen every 20k miles. go nissan..

That's not good. Isn't there a cotter pin to prevent that large nut from loosening up that much? If I remember correctly, mine has one.

there is a cotter pin but it's about 5 mm away from the nut. If the nut comes loose again, the wheel will already be wobbling before it hits the cotter pin.
