HKS III non sport coilovers... Suggestions on Damper Settings.??

okay.. i just got alignment and cornerbalance and i have to go back to alignment shop to get the toe bolt holes regrinded ..

my question is this.. i have my damper settings set to full hard right now.. it's a lil bouncy and im thinkin a lil too much oversteer..

rather than play around back and forth, but i will if i have to, does anyone have any suggestions as to optimal damper settings for the HKS III non-sport suspension..??? like how many turns on front or rear.? i will probably just play around with it, but i was wondering if anyone had already done the footwork and found a good enough setting for normal spirited daily driving with the occasional run on the twisties..???

any suggestons would b great..

Thankx..
Alf

i put it on all the way hard front and rear.. haha.. i don't suggest that setting.. a lil too bouncy and no real rebound at all.. but the car sticks to the road like it's on rails..

then i changed it to 15 clicks back from full hard front and rear and the car handles waaaaaay better with minimal bounciness.. i took it up in the hills with my buddy, and he shat his pants a few times cuz i pretty much took it to the limit.. on the regular streets it was pretty comfy.. i think i may stiffen it up maybe a click or two more towards hard and try it out..

i'll let u guys know.

no.. my passenger side rear shock came loose and i didn't find out the problem until this morning... the nuts were loose and it was clunkin all the way home.. kinda freaked me out.. i thought it was my system, since i have so many components, so i tore the whole thing out last night and i couldn't figure it out until my mom drove my car for me and i laid down in the back ... i reached thru my wheel and the shock seemed fine.. then i jackt up the rear passenger side and that's when i noticed that the nuts were so loose they were finger tight.. both of them.. i fixed them for now.. but since i am going back to West End alignment to dial in my suspension, i will ask Darren to loctite the nuts...

Okay, I am an airhead...I forgot we talked about it and just posted because I eventually wanted to do all you've done to your car.

If things go my way...my new ride will have air-ride too(notice how public transit has kneeling buses) lol

I do have the same question too Alf coz i am going to put on one of those hypermax soon. I asked a member here who has the same coilover. His setting is 17 in the front and 7 in the rear. Try it and let us know how's that working out for you.

Well if you want to take turns better. It shouldn't be set all the way stiff, the car needs to transfer energy from one side to the other. By keeping it all the way stiff it should feel like you are going more "straight" rather than turning.

People think having no body roll is related to taking turns better and faster. That is deffinately not the case.

Let sway bars handle the body roll, and your shocks and springs handle the turns.

While you want to elimante sway, you dont want to eliminate all of it.

so far 15/15 seems to be excellent... the ride is comfortable and the handling is pretty much unreal.. i noticed a little tiny bit of body roll, just barely when totally pushing it.. but geez.. i'm not on a track... and i don't want to push it to crashing my ride.. i have some really sweet hills up where i live.. tustin hills, cowan heights area... i know the hills like the back of my hand and i know my stock sport suspension was horrible.. i had a tacoma with springs and shocks that would of run circles around the stock g.. i also had a crx back in 1990 that had springs and bilstein shocks that would take the stock g no problem.. now.. with the HKS coils along with the corner balance.. hmm.. the g is pretty fun, and comparible with my other rides mentioned..

i took my car to West End Alignment in Gardena and although it wasn't cheap.. you get what u pay for.. i figured.. Darren doesn't get paid for what he does, he gets paid for what he knows... that being said.. i have 20x8.5 with a 245/35 up in front and a 20x10.5 with a 275/30 in the rear.. with the HKS's, you can pretty much go as low as i think u could possibly want and still drive.. but after speaking with Darren i opted not to go too low.. i don't take my car to shows and although low g's look the best, i wanted full functionality of my coilovers.. meaning.. I in no way wanted to rub my tires at all.. not one bit.. so.. i sacrificed looking cool for being able to really drive my car hard, whipping thru turns back and forth and my car performed epicly.. i couldn't believe it didn't rub.. i heard if i run a stretched tire i may be able to get low and still ride hard, but i don't really like the stretched tire look.. it looks nice on some rides, but not for me..

i don't have any experience with other coilovers, springs, shocks or anything to do with the g to compare other than my stock 05 sport suspension and the new set up.. so on a scale from 1-10 handling and comfort..?
STOCK.. 5 for handling, 7.5 for comfort..
NEW SET-UP.. 9 for handling , 7 for comfort with my settings..

Thanks for the review and good to hear the HKS hold on pretty solid. I can't wait to put them on but I'd wait for the weather gets really nice. So how much did you drop? I am planning to leave one finger fender gap. My wheels are flush to the fender, will this setting rub at all? Thanks!
